Picked up my first jeep, need advice
 
Hey guys!

After much research and shopping around I just got home from picking up my first Jeep Wrangler! I'm super excited.

It's a 2004 Wrangler Limited with 21,000 miles. Yes, 10 years old and 21,000 miles. It looks brand new. It's essentially spent the majority of the past 10 years sitting parked under a covered car port. I'm excited about the low miles but am also worried about the impact sitting 10 years with very little use has on a rig.

Here's my question...

Other than oil changes, I don't think it's had anything done in the way of service. If you picked up a 10 year old Wrangler with 21,000 miles what would you do in the way of maintenance? He didn't have the manual so I don't have the maintenance schedule. I'm planning on doing an oil change, tire rotation, and brake inspection tomorrow but what else should I do?

Do you think I should change all the fluids?

Transmission
Radiator
Brakes
Differential

What else?

I think this is a common misconception with low mileage cars. Just because it has low mileage, doesn't mean it just sat there. Maybe they only drove it a couple miles a week. If it's not leaking now, you'll probably be fine. There's nothing you can do to prevent a future seal blowing out. I think that's what most people think will happen. But I seriously wouldn't worry about it. When I buy a new vehicle, I change the oil at a minimum. Make sure the other fluids are full and look clean and aren't burnt. I change the differential fluid, but I wouldn't worry about that even on your 9 year old Jeep. Just drive it and I'm sure it will be fine.

It's alway a good idea to change fluids but not before you run the piss out of it to find leaks. After you got the leaks then drain all fluids and change all filters. Next your going to is put a twelve inch lift and some 50" super swampers and a stripper pole in the back. All other mods are irrelevant.

I'd change the brake fluid and the coolant now and then the trans, t/c and diffs when you have the time-money-interest.

Congratulations on the Jeep! The one thing that you might consider is a new battery if it is original. Not sure if I would trust a 10 year old battery even if it hasn't been used much. Otherwise, change the mentioned fluids, check the air intake for unwanted guests and have fun!

I would change the fluids you mentioned, plus I would change the mileage on it, and the gas in it...by way of driving it like it was MEANT to be driven!

Congrats. I would change all the fluids:
-Oil & filter
-Tranny fluid
-Differential fluid
-Fluid in both axles
-Coolant flush and replace coolant and not with the green kind
-Brake fluid
-Grease all zerk fittings
-Replace the spark plugs

Once you do all that then you can know that everything is good and you can keep your own log so it will last at least a couple hundred thousand miles.

you may want to replace the tires, too; mileage isn't the only thing that deteriorates them. Time and exposure to the atmosphere causes the rubber compounds to break down invisibly, which could result in a blowout. Most tires get worn out long before they age-out, but its a common issue on RV's.

I just acquired a jeep that was driven 1000 miles a year for the last 10 years; the tires look beautiful...but I checked the date codes on them, and they are 12 years old!

In addition to what these guys suggested, I would also change the belts and radiator hoses.

X2...only thing I would "add" would be the little springs inside the coil rail...you have to remove the coil rail to change the plugs anyway...and yeah they are probably"fine", but for the less than $20 they cost, for all 6.... I would switch them....think of the springs as the "wires" for the coil rail going to your spark plugs. also be very careful to use the correct plug...nothing "fancy" or hotter extra the 4.0 doesn't like those.... good luck and nice job on the Jeep!!

Is that the 2004 yellow LJ with the hardtop, completely stock that was on Craigslist? You in Vancouver?

Yes, I would change all fluids personally. I would inspect the bushings and tires for age cracks/rot too. Grease all fittings etc.

Here's what I got done today...

Oil and filter change
New air filter
Tires rotated, rebalanced, and filled (some were below 20 psi!?)
Replaced the blower resistor (fan only worked on high speed)
Checked front and rear diff fluids, level and condition

Lots more to do given the lists above! But it's a ton of fun. I love working on my rigs. I'm debating having someone do the transmission, brake, radiator, and diff fluids mostly because I don't have any easy way to transport them and don't know where I'd take them. I take my oil to the local auto parts house but I think they take all these other fluids.

Stripper pole, 12" lift, and 50's. I need a picture of that, preferably with a dance in progress. :)

UFO - It was actually in Gresham down by you. I live in Duvall, Wa. so it was a bit of a trek but totally worth it! 2004 Unlimited, bright yellow with a black hardtop, black interior, automatic, 21k miles. I paid $15,900 but It looks brand new. The guy drove it to the grocery store and back basically. I actually found another one just like it also in the Portland area. 30k miles, but it had a 4" lift and bigger tires. I passed on it for the unlimited because I thought I'd appreciate the extra room.

JP - Thanks for the tip on the springs. I didn't know about those things.

LJ the day before that one went up for sale or I'd have gone and looked at it. I've been shopping LJ's and getting on and off the fence for so long that it's habit to still look at what's out there. Seemed like a decent find given what I've been seeing. Lots of LJ's around the northwest though, and not hard to find good ones. It's the reasonable pricing here that is hard to find. Looks like you got both.

Silver with a black hardtop and interior. I like it a lot more than the '99 TJ I had. There was an immaculate low mileage impact orange one in Clackamas but they wouldn't budge on their price so I walked. I almost got a Rubicon LJ a couple times, actually glad I didn't.
