Trading hard top for soft top

I have the opportunity to trade my 4 month old painted hard top to my dealer for a premium mopar soft top from a new rubicon that's sitting in the showroom. I don't have a garage so I have no place to store the hard top in the summer anyway so I'm thinking I will run the soft top year round. Am I crazy to do this? I have a 5 minute drive to work and will be taking it to Florida for 6 weeks every winter. I only had a soft top on my previous jk and I miss that open air drive in the warm weather.

Get something else out of the deal too...

panthermark 10-23-2013 08:56 AM

That is a awful deal.....

Is the dealer kicking in $$$$ as well?

Keep the hardtop. Do you have family nearby that won't mind storing a hardtop for the summers? Soft tops are easy to score deals on through various avenues.

If I had a choice (I only have the premium soft top), I'd keep the hardtop. I don't know what a heavy snowstorm would do to the soft top, and I wouldn't want to find out firsthand. At least with the hardtop, you can take off the front panels when riding around in Florida. The hardtop also provides better security for the vehicle.

dukedallas 10-23-2013 09:49 AM

DONT DO IT! He's robbing you! Like people said you can deal deals on soft tops everywhere, I got my Premium for $500 on CL..the hard tops go for over $1500 look online even the ones for TJ's are going for $500-$800. You'd be hard pressed to find a JK hardtop for under 1k. I hate seeing a fellow jeeper being raped. Let us know how it turns out!

PS My friends store hardtops outside all the time it'll be find just keep it off the ground on a pallet, and tape up the connector wires.

You're located in Ontario..... Keep the Hard Top. You can always remove the hardtop for nice weather.

Thanks for the advice everyone. If I had somewhere to put the ht I would keep it for sure. I live in an apartment so I have no place to put it and no relatives that can or will help me out. It's hard to sell a hard top here since most jks come with one. Soft tops sell quick for good money. I got $1000 for mine. The top I'm looking at is a new mopar premium with window tint. My ht is painted premium but I've used it for a few months. It sure looks nice on my jeep too.

dukedallas 10-23-2013 10:43 AM

Don't you have friends? With yards?

StarBrite 10-23-2013 10:45 AM

Or a mini storage place? Maybe see how this winter treats you, before making a permanent decision?

Michel347 10-23-2013 10:53 AM

You have a 2013 JKUR, most used hardtops that look brand new like yours, go for 2000$ on the used market, they are easy to sell, at least for 2dr JK especially at this time of year.

getahemi 10-23-2013 11:49 AM

I can prob find somewhere to put it outside for the warmer months. Mini storage is $90 bucks a month. Should maybe just do that for six months a year and buy a soft top. I didn't realize the hts were worth so much. I better hold on to it. U

How deep is your parking spot? I saw on another thread here somewhere that somebody bought the hard top storage cart (it stands the top on its end and has a second piece to hold freedom panels and doors, it then slides into the first piece to minimize floor space) and they just store it in their spot behind the Jeep.

If you have a balcony put it there!!

getahemi 10-23-2013 02:46 PM

Can't put it in my parking spot or on my balcony. Fancy a$$ rental development has rules. Lol.

getahemi 10-24-2013 08:42 AM

Thanks to all your input I've decided to keep the hard top and look for a used soft top for summer use. I've seen ads for nice soft tops for 5 to 6 hundred bucks so I think I'm gonna go that route. Thanks again guys. Btw it's snowing here and the remote start and heated seats were awesome this morning!

Sorry. I didn't realize there was a rule against that. We will continue this via pm.

Siggy14 10-25-2013 08:25 PM

I would have to agree get more out of the deal then just the trade.

Yes. I'm keeping it. I made a deal for a new soft top from a member on here. I'm gonna go get it tomorrow.

I LOVE my trucklites.

I got them from here
SET OF 2 Truck-Lite 7'' Round LED Headlamp, Complex Reflector Optics Design Phase 7 27270C

Best price I could find. Make sure to order the antiflicker adapter. It also doubles as a H4 To H13 adapter so no need for one of those.

Thanks for the link. I'm curious to see what I can get them for here in Canada, I'm going to check this week. That'll give me a good comparison.
