Real Mileage

I have a 94 YJ 4.0L 5 speed with 31x10.5x15. I would like to find out my MPG. I got 213 miles on what I think is a full tank. (my gauge is messed up, said it was on empty but would only take 11gal) I know my speed is off so I'm guessing that my mileage would be off too. (I hope its becouse 14.2 MPG would suck:banghead:) Can someone tell me the math or about what my mileage would be?

Thanks, Chris.

Your math sounds about right ... MPG=miles per tank/gallons to fill up ... i've got a 04 tj 4.0 5speed and I average about 14.5 to 18 mpg.

if your speedometer is off your readings will be off. gps is a good substitute. if you have one that records miles and top speed and all. you start by filling tank to top and reset trip meter on gps. then just go and drive. next fill up fill to top like before and look at the mileage you recorded. Take your trip mileage and divide by gallons needed to refill. that will give you mgp.

Those mile markers on the highway are a good way to tell how much your speedo is off. Drive about 20 miles and compare your odo to the highway markers. My xj is off by 8% due to larger than stock tires. I take the mileage, multiply by 1.08 and divide by the gallons used.

14 is about right

scrambler1 08-27-2009 08:23 PM

14 is not that bad. I get around 12 with a 2.5,5 speed,4.10's and 33's. With alot less power.

porkchop71 08-27-2009 10:25 PM

my guess is more like nine or ten

Filled it up this morning, 12.2 mpg with wheeling this weekend. I plan on next year after I finish my scrambler going 350 TBI in my wrangler also, should actually get better mileage.

Filled up last night and pulled 17 outta mine :) took it easy on the skinny pedal this last tank lol.

I get around 20MPG at what RPM do you shift? I shift at 2250 I know its a little early but it really saves my gas !!!!!and Im always in the highest possable gear to keep my RPMs downs

scrambler1 08-28-2009 04:35 PM

I'm jealous.

Cons_Table 08-28-2009 04:41 PM

I shift at about 2 grand...ive noticed if u follow the dummy shift light on the dash, u tend to have better mileage

Jeepzcb09 08-28-2009 05:01 PM

I dont follow the light exactly but like i said 2250 RPM's and im pleased with my MPG

Cons_Table 08-28-2009 05:54 PM

ya i dont usually follow it right on either but im right there with you between 2000 and 2500 rpm

morphious 08-29-2009 11:33 AM

2000 rpms every time and i'm always in the highest gear and i get 18-20 depending if i go wheeling or if i try and keep up with my friends on the highway

I just got back from a 1000 mile trip in my '93 YJ 4.0 auto trans. I was getting about 17-18 MPG on the highway driving ~65 +/- 5 MPH.

Fweaky 08-30-2009 09:04 AM

My 89 YJ gets an awesome 10 mpg on the highway, and thats with 3.07 gears.

morphious 08-30-2009 09:23 AM

that's probably cause of the 33's u run

NAVYCHIEF 08-30-2009 09:40 AM
