Well, I had an '86 CJ I bought stock in '90. I put a crate motor in it, a 700R4 trans, high pinion 44 and 60, lift with 35s, and the list goes on. Anyway, after a back injury I found it difficult to get at all comfortable driving it and it sat for a few years only being driven occasionally. It was a real shame.
I picked up an FJ (Funk Junk) Cruiser (I know, I know... Don't flame me... It was the pain meds... I swear!) as a daily driver and occasional off-road vehicle. A decent guy from Colorado bought my CJ and picked up my rig sight unseen. It was tough after owning it for 18 years and puting so much of myself into it. One of the toughest things I ever had to do.
While modding my FJ last month I noticed that the front fender apron had some evidence of buckling (a common issue with the FJ) even though the off roading in that vehicle was limited to mild dirt roads. I was only 1500 miles out of warranty and the vehicle was otherwise pristine. Toyota refused to stand behind the vehicle and indicated that the structural issue was due to my lift. There are many hundreds of FJs out there, unmodified, with the same issues and they will only stand behind them if they are within the 36K warranty. So much for "Toyota Quality."
I have had three Jeeps and two Dodges and other than a leak hear and there, no issues. I have owned five Toyota and two had severe issues. Toyota had to buy one back after arbitration on an "known" engine design flaw. Yet they still made it so a judge had to get involved for them to step up :bottom:.
I didn't want to deal with arbitration again, so I went to my trusted Dodge / Jeep dealer and traded the FJ in for an '09 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. The structural problem gave me the excuse I needed to convince my wife it had to be done :) . It's great to be back! I don't know if I should curse Toyota or thank them.
