Worth Fixing Up?

Ok, so I recently just got a 97' TJ and I am wondering if I should bother doing stuff to it. I got it for a great price and it has a 2" lift on it. But do you guys think its worth finding a hard top, adding new bumpers, putting in a sound system... and other stuff. Or sould I just get a newer one that has this stuff already? I figure there is about 2-3 thousdand dollars worth of stuff I want to do to it, but just dont know if its worth it since its a 97.

"Worth it" covers a lot of ground.
To an old guy like me, it means will I get the money back when I sell the Jeep.
To someone younger it might mean "will it get girls interested in me."

Economically, no, it's not really "worth it." If you add 3 grand of stuff to the Jeep, it will not increase its value by 3 grand.

But you need to drive it and you need to like it. So it may be worth it to you.

97 Wranglers are nice Jeeps - the only "disadvantage" to them is that they were super popular and there are lots of them out there. They probably won't ever be super collectible. But they probably won't depreciate a whole lot more either.

Thanks for the input. It seems worth it to me, but I just dont want to go through the trouble if its not going to last me a few years. My 95 YJ had tons of issues so I hope the TJs are better.

well buying a new one to me isn't worth it. so you have a 97 tj you got for cheap, and you wanna put a few thou in it to modify it. which basically we all do. so for less than 10 grand you have your jeep the way you want it, or for over 20 or maybe even 30 you can buy a new one. no brainer to me. even if you have a couple thou in repairs over the next few years its still better to keep your old one. and thats not even talking interest if you finance a new one. if you wanna go that route you're talking 40 grand minimum over the life of the loan, if you only have a small down payment and average credit.

show me one person on this board that can get their money back out of their jeep.

I stay with fixing it up... It's a Jeep and just keep up with the maintenance on it and you should be fine.

If you got it for $1000 its worth it If you paid $5000 I'd say no. It's a JEEP Beat it like it owes you money!

I think if I had one like that... but didn't need it right away... I'd start thinking about dropping a CRD into that thing...

If it's in good condition then sure but if it's a real junker then i'd save my money. TJ's were a very good model.

I say fix up your old one, I just goy my 98 a few weeks ago for pretty cheap and have already put $1000 in it(new windshield, rims, fenderflares,cd player, etc) and I love it, thats what jeeps are about and why they are so special , cause people make them their own and they are so diifrent then anything else. Also Im not a fan of the new jeeps, they are not "jeeps" anymore to much comforts and to much apperance changes!!!!!!!!!
