advice...HID for '12?
First a confession...then a question at the bottom.
Im man-enough to admit when Im wrong.
Many moons ago, I jumped on here and posted a diatribe about how silly some folks were to be chasing the bling of HID lights for $400-$500 per conversion when I was able to upgrade my bulb and reflector on ebay for about $50 and get just as good a result.
I was wrong....about MANY aspects.
I apologize to all the bling-chasers I offended. some of my opinion remains valid. Brighter still doesn't mean better. spectrum is still EXTREMELY important. Distribution is vital. all that stuff.
But the HID power is a clear winner....again just my opinion....always subject to being proven wrong...again. Life is about learning.

I know I want HID.
I know I want 4300k spectrum.
I know I don't want flicker.
Im still guilty of thinking that more power is better...so I think I want 100watt
I know I want the light to stay on the road and ditches and out of the trees and sky...so I THINK I want projector beam lenses to keep the light where I want it.
I don't give a squat what it looks like. Anybody whose ever met me knows Im not about aesthetics. I work in the boonies and I wanna to see those kamikaze white-tails before they test my ranch-hand deflector shield (bumper) on my way home after a long day.

A great many of you have already gone down this trail, and I'm finally catching on that yall might be onto something...(especially since I like the HID's on my wifes car and the HIDs on the planes that I fly). So I figure that rather than trying to re-invent the wheel and spend unnecessary cashola experimenting with various options trying to find what works well...

Stick with a 35w setup. What you want is a projector retrofit. With projectors you are going to get some color flicker at the cutoff but there are ways to reduce this. Give a call to The Retrofit Sourse. tell them what you want and they will get you set up. Last I heard they are working on a drop in projector for tj's and jk's.
What ever you do don't buy projector headlights on eBay or the such.
just helped a friend install a set on a toyota. It was pretty straight forward but there was a lot of tweaking to get things to line up. The first thing we did was order 2 replacement aftermarket light housings for both sides because we didn't want to slice and dice the OEM's and also disable the car while we were working on them, they were $70 each side (a late model Rav4). The other post is right, I think what you like about your wife's setup is that they're projectors. On the jeep, with only a single lamp you're going to need/want bi-xenon's with the drop down cutoff shield, and get housings with an LED drl installed inside so you're not running the hid's all day. By coincidence, we also installed morimoto projectors which are from the retrofit source.
What you're going to need first is to find some housings you like. They're all over ebay, but there are some available on normal online stores, many are in the motorcycle section. You also need to decide if you want to buy housings already made to hold projectors and possibly come with a set, or buy a generic plastic housing that can be pulled apart from the lens for you to cut and fit the projector and drl led of your choice.
You're right about the price though. In the end, you'll be looking at about $300-400/side to do this properly and do the work yourself.
So....What I want is a "HID Projector Retrofit", right?
I went to the Retrofitsource.com site and they do have cool stuff, but sounds like I would need to cut up my existing reflector housings and install the projector module into the housing., Right?
I had figured that given the popularity of converting to Projectors, there would be a manufactured option to drop into the 7" sockets with built-in projector lenses.
Something like this:4300K Original Xenon White HID Kit 7" Round Chrome Projector Headlights H6024 | eBay
The idea would be to buy a housing SIMILAR to the one listed above and then stick a Bi-xenon HID kit in it. Would that give me 80% of the light and focus of a "true" projector retrofit...at 50% of the cost and 30% of the time? Just wondering.
I know everybody keeps saying stay away from ebay. And Im not arguing either way. Simply seeking information. Are they saying to stay away from housings (reflectors) bought off ebay or are they saying to stay away from HID conversions from ebay. or is it just the more modern version of walmart-hatred and the advice is to stay away from anything from ebay?

The retrofit source is working on a drop in projector for the round headlight jeeps. Maybe give them a call and ask about a release date.
definitely spend some time finding a decent housing before you take all the time to install it. As mentioned, the easiest way is to find a housing ready to take a projector, as is, but that also limits your options. There's nothing wrong with cutting up a housing if you put some thought into how you go about it. There are some kick butt builds out there, look around for examples of good and bad refits before you start if you decide to go ahead with cutting your own. The funniest one i saw was a gutted light bucket with 2 projectors clamped in place with U bolts. hey, it works but definitely not the prettiest design. The nicest are the ones where they've heated and molded acrylic sheets inside the housing, the end result is an absolutely perfect OEM fit for the projector.
