bikini top question

i was thinking about getting a new bikini top for my jeep 01' annversary with full doors. i have a soft top on it - no hard top. i was looking a different tops and some said i might need a windshield channel? what is this? and do i need it for mine? thanks for any help!!!

Yes, it's called a header. I'm not familiar with soft tops and how they secure to the top of the windshield frame, but my bikini top requires a header in order to run my bikini top. It mounts to the top of your windshield frame, and locks in to the slots where your hard top latches go. (not sure if soft tops latch that way too)
The front portion of the bikini top has a plastic lip sewn into it that will slide inside of the header that you need to purchase.

I have the safari top, and really don't care for it. I'm thinking about running it on Craigslist, and buying the one that covers just the front seats.

Before you ask, BESTOP is by far, the best bang for the buck. IMO

There are a few pics of the channel in this thread.

On a side note....do you have the black or silver? Either way post up some pics in the TJ section!

i have the silver, i just got it 2 weeks ago i traded on craigslist (i traded my 03 accord for this jeep) running into a few not so big problems on her but well worth the time, i have alot of plans for this jeep in the future:) i really want the top that just goes over the front seats (the sun is killer sitting at lights and so forth) this is a everyday driver for me now untill i do what i really want to do with it. as far as the soft top goes on the front just has the locking clips that go in the hole above the visors and you snap them shut.

If you want one you can keep on under your soft top then check out the Spiderweb Shade top. I just pull my top off and hit the road when I feel like it. The Bestop bikini tops have a nicer material but I prefer not to use a header. One less thing in the back of the Jeep is one less thing in the way or someone trying to steal.

They are a vendor on this forum still I believe.

I looked at getting a bikini top also but it's not much different from driving with the top up and leaving the side and back windows out. If the sun is what is killing you I think you should get the mesh bikini top. I have seen one of these tops on a jeep and it's real cool how it looks and works. It blocks the sun and still lets in the breeze. I know Quadatec has them around $40.00. That would be my choce!

I have a "no drill" type header and you'll get mixed reviews between the "no drill" and the "drill" type header. The "no drill" lays on top of the windshield bulb which is the rubber piece on top of your windshield frame, and it latches into the 2 slots above the visor. I'm not familiar with the drill type so I can't help you there.
The spider brand top that was mentioned above just bungees around your roll bars, but not sure how it attaches to the windshield. That's why you are able to leave it in place when your regular soft top is up. That's very convenient, but won't protect you as much if you get into a rain shower. (you'll get wet, no matter what you're running, but the full bikini tops give a little more protection)

I fully agree with what you're saying about not being much different.....lucky for me, I have a hard top, so I REALLY get to enjoy the bikini top when I need to wear it!!! Topless is the best way to go though.

Also noteworthy, is there are 2 variants on how the bikini's attach to the sides
- 1 style wraps around the rollbars (which means the door surrounds have to come off)
- 1 style attaches to the door surrounds. (since you like I have the full doors, I think this is the better style, I have the other one, and its irritating.)

If you look above the rear view mirror there is a thing called the foot mans loop. Any time you have the top off you are going to get wet one way or another when it rains. That is why I like having mine stay on under the top so I can just pull the top back on and spend less time getting wet.

All personal preference there are many types.

Spiderweb shade top does connect to the roll bar but does not require you remove anything. Just throwing that out!

Levinoss: If we did installation videos with cute girls in tank tops, would I sell you a Bikini top?

If you make a quality (Bestop quality) one that I can keep under my soft top then we will talk business.

Good looking girl installation video is optional.
