rattling @ idle

I just bought a 2003 Sahara.. on warranty..

While i'm in gear at idle, i hear a rattling noise that seems to be coming from near my feet.. also, slowing to a stop or accelerating, on a few occasions, i noticed my jeep seems to kick itself in the ass. I've also noticed minor slippage from the trans when accelerating maybe three times in the 3 months i've owned it..

Has anyone any experience with these symptoms?

if its under warranty the just take it back to the dealership. thats the best you can do

If you are noticing ANY slipping in the transmission, have it checked out before you go out of warranty. That is not something that you want to have to do in the near future. As for the rattle, I don't know what to tell you, other than look under the dash to see if you can find something loose against the dash...

If you are talking about an auto there are a couple things that you can check first. Make sure that it has the proper amount of fluid in it. A fluid starved auto will slip gears on you. Especially if you are on an incline.

The rattle a couple easy things to check would be the dust shield on the tranny itself of the heat shield insulation on the bottom of the floor pan to protect your feet from the exhaust.

Also check the 4 wheel drive lever. Mine rattles terribly at idle and slow speeds but when I push the lever down firm it stops. I read on another thread here that it's a $20 part and a quick fix, I just haven't had the time.

Did you ever find out what was causing these problems? I don't have any slippage, but my TJ has developed a rattle at idle, and I have no idea what's causing it. I've looked under the hood, but I can't seem to hear the rattle unless I'm behind the wheel. I may have to go behind the dash, but I'm skeptical that that's where the noise is coming from.

As far as the rattle when in nuetral, I've heard several people tell completely different situations. Some say it's just the normal sound of the tranny, others say it's the throwout bearing. On my past 2 jeeps they have both done that. My first one when I got it had 14k on it and it rattled, now my recent one has 63k and it rattles. Though a buddy has a 99 with 76k and his does not rattle. It has driven me nuts, but it still gets through the mud without any problems so until something breaks it will rattle away!!

If the clutch doesn't slip, it is the clutch throwout bearing. Mine does that, too. The ideal is to change the bearing (should be done in a garage - it's not straight forward).

My rattling at idle was the catalytic converter on my 122,000 1997 Wrangler. They get old and beak up internally. You can kill the engine and crawl under and bang on it with your fist and create the rattle.

I have an '03 Saraha, six cyl., 5-speed...it has a "rattle" too although not all the time. Push in the clutch, and it stops sooooo, I assumed the throw-out bearing was going out...Not so. It's the tranny. I've had several mechanics and fellow jeepers tell me that some of the transmissions seem to growl and it's probably the planetary gear and it's very common. Bugs the crap out of me but I'm not going to change anything until it (if it does), breaks. Good Luck!

Hey OneBoltShort, Did you notice any big change(s) when you added the chip, cold air intake or other mods? I've been thinking about adding a CAI and open up the exhaust. I've done that on all my other rides and it makes a noticible change.
