I have a 1990 Wrangler that has started to make a loud squealing sound most of the time that it is driven. The squeal happens only when the clutch is not pressed and the jeep is in motion(doesn't happen when I first start the jeep). The faster I go, the more frequent the sound happens. Sometimes the sound doesn't happen at all. Other times, the squeal is so bad that I feel like the jeep is going to fall apart. Any idea on what the problem may be? I also don't know the first thing when it comes to jeeps or cars for that matter.

Where does it sound like its from? could be a belt, worn brake pads, etc.

My brakes are pretty old but the sound doesn't start happening when i hit the brakes. The sound happens anytime the clutch isn't engaged while moving. My guess is that it is one of the belts but I don't know how to test that out.

if it was a belt then it would do it all the time if tis when the clutch is not depressed then it sounds like the clutch it self

Throw out bearing. I just experienced the same thing. If you continue to drive on it your going to have to replace the pressure plate because the bearing is going to do a number on it. While your in there you might as well as replace the clutch. My guess is you still have the factory clutch in the transmission and while the transmission is down do it all. I have the bill outside in my glovebox if you want to know anything more just pm me.

I think I gave the wrong impression when I spoke about the clutch. What I meant to say is that the sound happens when in gear but not in neutral. Everytime I hit the gas in gear I hear the sound. There are also occasions when the sound doesnt happen at all. I only take the jeep on short 1 to 3 mile trips.

Thats just my two cents, from what you said it sounds like what i just went through aka throw out bearing.

yeah i gotta admit that's what it sounds like to me to. because a belt would squeak regardless of in gear or not.and so would a pulley their has to be something amiss in the drive train if that's the only time it does it.
