It's just a (not) good vibration...
Ok, so here's the deal...

I noticed on the highway that at 60mph I had a vibration going on that seemed to come up through the I brought it up to my mechanic and he drives it and inspects it and says:

"The driver's side front tire belt is broken."

Ok, so I take it back to the place where I got the tires, and they check it out and say:

"The tire belt isn't needs a rotation and balance."

Hmm...ok. So I let them do that and then proceed to drive to school. On the highway. The thing still feels funny, but I don't feel it so much in the steering like before. It just seems like the overall drive is...wiggly? Pulling side to side, maybe?

My regular mechanic had also mentioned that one of my rims was slightly bent, however, he did not seem concerned that it was bad enough to affect the overall drive. My friend who is a mechanic seems to think it's the rim that is screwing everything up.

So, in short, who is making the most sense here?! I'm at a loss, as I am clueless about these things...:banghead:

my jeep vibrates too on the highway 65-75

i havent had it checked out but im gettin new tires/a lift and a new steering stabilizer in the next month so i'll have it aligned etc.. if it still does it ill go from there.

im sure my tires just need to be balanced and my stabalizer looks pretty shot

Ehh a bent rim will affect it more on a car with a smaller side wall tire then a truck. What do you mean by shimmy?

OR wiggly? like the steering wheel will move side to side? Does it feel like it starts at the rear of the truck and move forward? More info please.

Well, before the rotation I could feel a vibration up in the steering wheel...but now it just feels like it pulls to the left and the right slightly in the rear.

Did it do this before? Did it just start like last week? Do you have any friends that have jeeps or somebody from the board near you to take it for a spin that has more working knowledge of it. I am not saying you don't but maybe they feel it differently.

The vib in the front started a few months ago, but didn't get bad enough until recently to really cause a problem..sadly I don't have any friends that have Jeeps, and I haven't really been on this forum long enough to figure out whose near me.

However, I am planning on taking it back to the tire place on Saturday and seeing if they have any other answers for me, and if they can't/ won't figure it out then I do have my mechanic friend who can check it out..and I really don't have a working knowledge of cars/trucks/anything that runs on fuel of any kind, so no worries. :)

Simple question- did they actually re-balance your tires or did they just tell you they did and moved them to the rear? I have seen it done. That is the only way I can think of the issue moving to the rear.

TJ Lady, theres a bunch of us in Northeast OH, if you're near Lorain county On Off-road 4x4 in Oberlin is a good place, the owner knows just about anything in the driveline area of jeeps, or someone that' ll get you the right answer.

Well...the print out I got after they were done said balance/rotation..but, you never know what they actually did..esp. since I know nothing. :redface:

I'm in Summit, about an hour away I'm guessing? Not horrible I suppose...if this nonsense keeps up it will be worth the trip if needed.

TJ lady do like the rest of use due hehehehe EVIL LAUGH INSERT HERE. Just start tossing bigger better strong parts at it till it goes away lol. 6in long arm kit sye 37in tires! hehe.

So back to the issue at hand. Can you tell if your tires were rotated (they should of). Also if you can tell me which way the tires went along with were your bent rim was? Possible?

Oh are really blowin my mind would I be able to tell if they were rotated? The only thing I notice is that all the tires have little white marks on them except for the passenger front..I don't know what this is or if it means anything. I believe the bent rim was on the passenger for which way they went..err..I thought it went from the front straight back, and then the back to the front and crossed..However I didn't see it in action so I can't tell you if this is the way it went down. So, by all rights, the bent rim should now be at the driver front..but, again..i really have no idea. I'm not much of a help..sorry!

As a side note: 6in long arm kit sye 37in tires?!? Do you know how much of a running start I'd have to get just to make it in the thing? Har! :D

Sharkey that is what I was thinking. If you have a jack and a spare tire with a good fellow neighbor boy you can teach him how to change a tire on a jeep lol. I would try that next. If you can actually tell what rim was bad.

I'm just full of problems..because, you see, the tires that are currently on the thing are a little bigger than my spare..which is the factory size still. I'm sure I'm going to get a few stern words for that

At any rate, I'll keep your guys words of wisdom in mind when I take it back in Saturday and see what the outcome turns out to be..

In the meantime, tomorrow night I'm going to Yankee Lake with some friends to enviously check out all the other Jeeps and lifted trucks flying through some mud! Whoop whoop!

Mine did the same thing but It was the tires, I had Courser MT's on mine, and I don't know if it was the street or the tires, but I have heard the older courser's wore unevenly and caused the problem, I have since replaced them with some BF goodrich AT's and no more vibrations.

well i definitely cant say anything about you having the wrong size spare. iv got 35x12.5 on the ground with a 30x9.5 spare, like i could ever use that thing lol but thats what AAA is for. having work done to a jeep, or any other vehicle, always seems to change where the noise/vibration/problem is coming from. what your describing really sounds like just a bad steering stabilizer to me. bent rim is a possibility but as said before a slight bend is almost unnoticeable on a jeep because the sidewalls are tall enough to make up for a slight bend. id throw a new steering shock on it, wont run you more than 150 installed, and see if that helps. even if it doesnt help it is one less thing to worry about and it is a good thing to check off the list when going through something like what you have. i dont have a steering shock on mine, mainly because its rusted into the drag link and iv been too lazy to cut/torch/drill it out, but without it my jeep has a mind of its own when im over 40mph.

If it was shaking the wheel, and they moved it and now its shaking the rear, you have one of three things wrong.

Out of balance wheel/tire (This is the most likely, as it will come on at the speed you stated). There are several ways to balance a wheel. the biggest thing some tire chunkers do wrong is single plane a tire. make sure they run a dual plane balance on it, and that it balances out perfect. Many think that a LT tire just needs a single, but I've seen it before where trucks larger than a Jeep needed a dual plane, to even out shimmy's. Jeeps are light (ish) and they need a dual plane.

Bent Wheel - less likely due to the size of our sidewalls, and you'd be suprised how bad of a bend you can take w/o noticing. (esp with large sidewalls.)

Bad tire - I'd put this as the #2 likely. generally though with a bad tire you can feel it at lower speeds as well.

Update: It was found by my mechanic (not at the tire place) that not one, but two, of my tires were bad and it ended up taking me 3 trips to get them replaced! They swore up and down that nothing was wrong with the tires, but lo and behold after getting them replaced and taking the heep for a drive down the highway - no shaking!

I just can't believe it took my 3 trips (not counting the ones to my regular mechanic) for new tires to be given...I don't think I will ever in a million years go back to that shop!!

Glad you got it solved...that kind of poor service by the tire shop is not so rare... unfortunately!...But the good news is it sounds like you have a good mechanic so hang on to him for sure!
