Pros and Cons of removing my factory A/C?

Pros and Cons of removing my factory A/C?

Thinking of just ripping it out. For starters, I got a quote of about $150 just to charge it and see if it has any leaks. Thats before they determine if any parts need to br replaced. Then a conversion would cost at least $200 more if they replaced the dryer, etc.. I just dont know if I really want to spend all that money fixing the A/C. Now if I don't, I would assume pull out the whole system, so I can have a more simple car, more room inside, etc. How would this effect resale value if at all, with me removing the factory A/C? I have no plans to sell, but a couple years down the road I might be ready to pass it on. Thoughts?

sounds like your board.find something else to work on

why dont you just get a can or refrigerant at the parts store and charge it yourself. Alot cheaper and it will prob work just fine. Everybody thinks that units leak refrigerant, and im not saying they dont but most off the time its something else.

Well it depends. With the condition that your sahara is in I wouldn't pull it out if it was like that from the factory.I would keep the interior as close to stock as i could. If you keep it in the condition it is in say in 8 or 10 years some one may come along and pay big bucks for "the sahara yj" that they have always wanted. I'm not saying make this thing into a mall crawler just dont go hacking it up,if you want to do that buy another trail rig.

just my 2 cents :D

very good advice, along the lines of what i was thinking. I did want to preserve the originality of this.. but then again.. it has a hell of a lot of holes drilled in various places.. not like its prestine..

my a windshield pillars have screw holes down them, no idea what used to be there.. then i got a bunch of holes down the tunnel in the middle, when the console was bolted thru the floor. then i have holes where my metal trunk box was bolted in..

oh also.. my normal climate system doesnt want to go to "vent" setting.. and when it does, there is no air coming out ANYWHERE...

well i also have holes in mine in various places but i figure i can fill them in somehow. i am trying to restore my dads to original condition right now just so it will look good. he bought it two months before i was born and then let it sit in the elements for twelve years with out a top:banghead:. i plan on buying one to make into a trail rig for myself :D

the heater controls. nothing to do with the A/C. I dont even know where the "normal" vents are... my defrost and heater work properly top/bottom..

alot of those controls are controled by cabling not wiring so maybe a cable slipped of the door somewhere

sent you a pm

Actually 401a is the drop in replacement for r12. Its a little less expensive and you dont have to switch anything over. I assume you took it to a mechanic and this is what they told you. I would try to have someone charge it first. Or just rip it out i dont care. LOL

What do you mean by "normal vents"? The vent position on the controls is not powered only flow thru air. It comes in from thr vent in front of the windshield and comes out of the heater vent by the floor. One thing you might want to check is the air vent drain hose. It is in front of the firewall on the passenger side. It gets clogged and will cause your floors to get flooded in the rainy season.

omg, you solved my questions again..

i noticed that my blower would shut off every time i went to the vent position. i thought it was broken. Thanks a lot for clearing that up for me. I saw some vents up above my heater vents, but still under the dash. Are those my "free air" vents? Like the only thing powering them is the fresh air depending on how fast I am going? For the air vent, I have to check that hose? I saw some sort of drain hose which was attached to my A/C box I removed. Is that what you mean, or is there another one? After my wash, I DID notice a big bunch of water on my passenger floor under my carpet!!!

I did removed my entire A/C system tonight btw. I am always after simplicity, and I knew I didnt feel like paying any money to fix it. This is just a 3rd toy for us, we both have our new cars for serious business. I don't think I'll drive it much in the winter, its too cold. I did not have to drain my radiator to get the condensor out. I just unbolted the radiator carefully and pulled it forward like 1". The only piece that is still in there is my compressor, until I can buy the new shorter belt for "non-A/C".
