how do y'all find trails

Curious, as always. How do y'all find trails? Is it word of mouth or research or do you stumble across them in your wilderness travels? Or, which seems obvious, a combination of all three?

A combination of the three, or you can also get with jeep clubs, and they can point you in the right direction. If you look up off highway vehicle areas, there's quite a few here in socal. Good luck.

Make your own trails. :p

Pit - my problem is my buddy is a pain about getting out of bed to actually go and the family frowns on me going out by myself. Plus, I keep popping tires so I don't think my jeep is ready for the big boy trails.

Scout - You live in Texas, that's a good way to find yourself on the wrong end of a shotgun. :p

Scout 11-03-2006 01:49 PM

You just need to be the one with the biggest gun. ;)

tiny terror 11-03-2006 01:56 PM

Where's the gun rack fit on your jeep?

Scout 11-03-2006 02:14 PM

It's not a rack, it's more like a gun turrent. :D

tiny terror 11-03-2006 02:15 PM

I thought there was a law in Texas that you must have a gun rack in your vehicle somewhere.

mine gun rack is on my hip, with my 44mag strapped in..... i'm in GA, most of the trails around here have been known for generations, our parents tell us bout them, and we go ride em, and pass em on down like that. but there's tons of new construction goin on here with the military base growing, there's a lot of logging and clearin of land goin on, so new trails open up every day

Yeah you’re right, we do have that law. It’s so we can keep all of the Californians from moving here. :flipoff:

Right back at'cha. I moved here from Colorado, grew up in Kansas and was born in Jersey. I ain't no Californian, now or ever, and I still got the Kansas accent to prove it.

i talk around with some friends of mine who dirtbike and stuff, they usually have some really fun spots. or we just go exploring sometimes

tiny terror 11-03-2006 07:26 PM

You don't worry about ending up somewhere you're not supposed to be? I have trails out behind my house, but a couple miles in they're posted for no vehicles. I'm not sure if that means no street vehicles or all vehicles in general. What sucks is I can see the "roads" stretch way far into the hills in all different direction.

Get thy self to the county court house, and look at the property records for the area behind your house. Some one owns it, find out who and introduce yourself. You never know they may own a jeep!

Nick 11-04-2006 08:43 PM

Go to your local libray. They will have books just on 4wheeling trails.

rebelBullDawg325 11-04-2006 10:35 PM

i guess around here gettin in trouble is just a risk we take. most people dont care as long as you dont leave trash and junk and dont tear anything up (mud holes not included)

RatherBNarizona 11-05-2006 12:58 PM

also we went to a bike shop and they showed us all the offroading trails for vehicles in the area, and they gave us a bunch of free maps

I never thought of that. The trails, as far as I've gone, are great fun and offer fantastic views, though the old rusted out carcass of a four door halfway down a ravine didn't make my passenger feel very good.

I should probably get involved in a local jeep club, but they all seem to have these beasts that my little stock jeep just can't keep up with. I'd hate to slink home humiliated because I couldn't get up a trail. Or worse, hold the whole party back. Or even worse, get in trouble because of pride (I have this Napoleonic complex).

My buddy who has a jeep doesn't have the time that I have, so I spend most of my time pinning him down on dates far in the future. The last trail I picked out was too tame for him, but it was my first time driving myself. He's cool about it, but I know he wants me to do some mods so we can hit better trails.

I just bought the dang thing in March though and everyone is giving me grief for not buying the used Rubicon that had everything that I'm looking at adding. I wanted to do my own work on it, what can I say.

Thanks though guys, I'll look into all the suggestions. :D
