Getting ready to do some maintenance

So this weekend it's about time I change the axle fluids and lube everything up. Any need to know tips/advice? It's an 06 2.4L. I can just pull the plug on both axle's drain and refill right or do I need to take the whole cover off? Any suggested type of grease to pump the zerks full with and recommended fluid to fill the axles with? Manual says mopar 80w-90 API gl-5 axle and gear lube, watcha think?

Also I washed my engine and covered everything important exept my oil dipstick, think I got a few drops of water down the dipstick, is that going to hurt anything if I don't change my oil for another 2k or so? ooops.....what can happen?

No real need to remove cover, but it sometimes makes for easier for draining, if no drain plug and plus you can inspect the gear teeth as well.

Zerk grease, I typically use Mobil 1 grease and hit all the zerks with.

Hmmm never really needed to cover the engine other then airbox intake for washing the engine compartment.

well yea I just covered the airfilter but I noticed after that the oil dipstick wasnt all the way sealed down and I lifted it a little and there was a little bubble of water around it. I pulled it out and there was tiny little water droplets on the stick. I don't think it's a real concern but i get paranoid about these things.

You will be just fine. No worries

Are you missing your dipstick? I'm confused as to how water would have got in there. If there's much water, you should be able to see a milky like color if you pull the oil cap or possibly on the dipstick I believe.

Edit...just saw your response . . . I wouldn't worry much about it if you think it really just a couple of drops.

thx I feel better now :)

So I guess the other thing I need to know would be what kind of oil for the axles. Would mobil 1 80w-90 GL-5 be a good bet for a dana 30/35

Yea you'll be fine with recommended oil in manual or haynes manual as well.

how important is it to have synthetic in the axles?

csamn2007 10-08-2009 11:02 AM

synthetic is a personal choice really, some people say use it others say it doesnt matter.

Ok so I think I'm all set, I took the day off today and did a lot.
One last question.

I found 7 grease fittings in the front end and none in the rear and pumped them all full. did I get them all (I couldn't find any more zerks maybe 1 or 2 are hiding?) or am I missing anything that needs some grease??

Thanks this has been super helpful.

Others say never use synthetic.

^ your picture is amazing lol. I think you got them all for the grease. Do you have greasable ball joints too?

nicolas-eric 10-08-2009 01:27 PM

There are the zerk fittings. Only older TJs have the one in the rear.
Sorry I have this pic only in German.

I also have greasable driveshafts, control arms, track bars, sway bar end links and some more. But these parts arenīt stock.

adkjoe 10-08-2009 01:35 PM

thx nicolas, you only have 6 circled on the front end though i found 7 on mine, so i'm guessing i'm good. You just pump them until grease starts to come out right, thats something you really can't mess up?

nicolas-eric 10-08-2009 01:38 PM

Yes I pump until grease comes out of the rubber thing.
Where did you find the 7th one?

There was 4 on the drivers side and 3 on the passenger. the missing one is directly behind the second one on the drivers side. If I had a camera I would take a pic for you.

I think mine has 25 zerks - it's like an Easter Egg hunt when I'm laying under the Jeep :)
