Project Bruce: Reviving a 1997 Wrangler TJ

A few weeks ago I bought a 97 Wrangler as a driver for my son who will be driving soon. I had a suspicion that I would really like working on it and it was a good thing that I did. The TJ had 106k miles and it barely ran and was overheating when it did run. I visitied WF often for advice from members and decided I had to give some back fro those that would come after me.

So far we (my son and I...cool bonding and teaching meoments) have worked on a few things; I will chronicle those things on this post.

Some specs about Bruce (my Wrangler): 1997 TJ, 106k miles, 2.5 L 4 Cylinder, red with a soft black top. Oh yeah...and very dirty and lacking much needed TLC for years!http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1255192847

First: the overheating problem. Bruce had about 3 cups of rusty nasty water in the cooling system. Initial diagnosis was a bad water pump, thermostat and radiator. We started by removing the fan shroud, fan and thermostat housing. Look at that nasty pump and engine cooling interior!http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1255193029

Take a look at this water pump! When replacing it, make sure that you know weather it is a standard rotation or REVERSE rotation. This will be denoted with an "R" on the pump wheel (thing sticking out in the picture).http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1255193149

Next, we sand blasted the thermostat housing...it was very dirty! Prepared the thermostat area and water pump areas on the engine. http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/a...scSep09101.jpg http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/a...scSep09052.jpg
