Black Rims, Powder coating or new ones?

Hi,

I would like to add black rims to my black 09 jeep wrangler unlimited. I figured there are several routes I can go which are:

New rims with new tires
Professional Powder coating of stock rims
Attempt to powder coat or duracoat my stock rims myself.

I would want to do that as cheaply as possible, I really like the stock rims so I like the idea of just getting those painted or duracoated black. Has anyone else done this with there wheels? Should I just wait until I wear out these tires and when I get new tires I might as well as get new rims and maybe a lift and everything else I'd need?

A friend painted his rims with a spray can and some special rim paint. And itīs still ok after 2 years and very much mudding.

If you want to do it cheap, the best options are:

1. Paint them.
2. Buy new ones.
3. Well, there isn't an option 3.

Powder coating will cost more than new ones. It will work pretty well, but if you chip any of it off, there won't be any matching it. You'll have to re-do it to match it.

I bought a complete set of Pro Comp wheels and BFG MT... the entire package cost me about $1,200 w/TPMS. Sold my stock Sahara wheels and tires for $650. So my out of pocket cost me less than professionally powder coating my 5 OEM wheels.

So could I get close to $650 selling my stock wrangler x wheels? They are the nicer ones with rims and not hub caps.

Had to give away my 08 Rubi wheels. Doesn't seem to be a big market for them out this way. Got rid of the BFG MT for $100.00 for 5 of em. Maybe in your area you can get some cash for them.

The math sez: Just cost out new wheels and the price of powder coating that many.

New ones wheels will win (unless you have Paris Hilton shopping skilz). :D

Mine were new take-offs (18" Sahara Wheels, Tires, and TPMS)... I had less than 100 miles on them.
Are yours the 17" Aluminum wheels? Go to the for sale section on this site (and you may also want to check Jkowners.com )as well as Ebay and see what the going rate is.

I was trying to keep from voiding the warranty so i also wanted to stick to OEM, if i had to do it again, may have done it differently. I purchased the rubicon rims on evilbay, rubi rubber from tire rack, and had the rims powder coated....at the end of the day, it may have been cheaper to just buy rims already murdered out (sorry, i like that term). Anyway, I got the rims on ebay for $320 with shipping but the powder coating process was just under $400 (OUCH). I had to pay an extra $100 for special order because they didnt have the color i wanted. If i had more time, i would have shopped around to see if another place would have done it cheaper. Obviously the center caps are plastic so i did those in my back yard. Anyway, here are some pictures. Also, since i paid extra for the powder coating, I got to keep the left overs, i have a bunch left over, let me know if anybody is interested in some.

So putting non-OEM wheels on your rig voids the warranty? Where does it state this in the warranty manual?

JeepQuattro 10-12-2009 11:11 AM

No, non-OEM wheels will NOT void the warranty. I am sticking with stock parts for now while under warranty. Once you get bigger tires that usually leads to other modifications which could void warranty or give the dealership an excuse to say warranty is void.

Plus, insurance doesn't cover aftermarket items. Found out the hard way when i was in a hit and run in my car and my rims were dented.

What you meant to say was that: "My policy with my insurance carrier didn't cover my aftermarket items".

My insurance policy covers aftermarket items as well as stock. Having aftermarket items actually helps, as to replace certain things you have to return to the manufacturer. With stock/OEM items, certain carriers decide not to force repairs to be done with OEM parts (sometimes for the worse).

Badfish 10-12-2009 04:03 PM

^ thats true my policy covers aftermarket items too

Hello all,
The law firm of Dworken & Bernstein, Co. L.P.A. in Ohio is currently investigating insurance claims. We are looking for people who purchased a rider on their car policy to cover additions to the vehicles such as rims, handicap/medical conversions, stereo systems, etc. If you purchased this additional coverage, made a claim, and were denied compensation for the items included in your rider--please call me. Preferably in Ohio, preferably in the past year.
JeepQuattro, if you purchased a rider on your policy- your scenario is exactly what we are looking for.
Thanks,
Leah
