Re-Using Diff Case Bolts ?

Hello.

Can I re-use the diff case bolts when I install a new ARB diff case? Or do I have to use new ones?

Thanks.

If you are referring to the big red ARB diff cover, I think you should use new hardware. Should come with hardware, but if I remember correctly the one on my buddy's Jeep had different bolts than stock and they are probably a bit longer seeing that the thickness of the cover is about 10x the stocker.

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 10:59 AM

No Iīm talking about the bolts that attach the ringgear to the diff case.

Schmo 10-12-2009 11:02 AM

Sorry man . . . I was way off!!! :D Was looking at that cover yesterday at the Expo . . . those ARB covers are BEEF.

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 11:07 AM

Yes I know. I have two ARB covers.

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 12:27 PM

Yea you can reuse them. I don't know if they are suppose to be changed but I have never seen a reused bolt break before. IF you can get a set of bolts for it at the local shop then do it. If it is going to take 5 weeks reuse them with some blue locktite.

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 12:30 PM

I already reused them with blue loctite and 75 Nm torque. But a buddy told me that I shouldnīt do that.
Btw. itīs neary impossible to find some bolts with a inch thread over here.

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 12:35 PM

I mean they can stretch but I don't think so.

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 12:36 PM

Yes they can stretch. Thatīs why I tightened them uop with only 75NM and not with 10-120 NM (FSM).

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 12:37 PM

I meant to a level of them failing.

boostlesstj 10-12-2009 01:07 PM

i think if they have to go the full 120 Nm they need to be replaced

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 01:19 PM

Iīm a bit confused.
The 06 TJ manual says they need 95-120 NM. The 98 TJ manual says only 75 NM. But that are the same parts...

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 01:22 PM

^ Welcome to CHRYSLER/DODGE. I would only go to 75nm.

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 01:23 PM

in english terms the ring gear are 50-55 ft/lbs. :D

Thatīs 74.48 Nm.

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 01:36 PM

You better back thos bolts of then a .52nm :D. To get back on subject, I don't see a reason you can't reuse again. I will call a shop I know that does extremely good work and ask him. I will report back.

The FSM says "Donīt reuse them".
Why?
I donīt know..

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 01:41 PM

umm to be honest a lot of things say don't reuse them. Thinking about it they did it so they could make more money. :D

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 01:46 PM

Nicolas use red lock tite and your good to go! (made that phone call)

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 02:54 PM

Red loctite? Do I have to remove the bolts? I used blue loctite.

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 03:00 PM

Blue will hold it too. Did you just dap em or did you get a good amount of threads? IF you got the threads not the one drop they will hold just fine.

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 03:08 PM

I made one big drop on the lower 4-5 threads.

jdhallissey 10-12-2009 03:10 PM

ya as long as it just didn't get 1 thread they will not come off. I better see wheeling pictures by tm lol. BTW don't let a women drive your jeep please I don't know if I could stand to look at more pictures like your friends jeep.

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 03:24 PM

I never let a woman drive my Jeep. I did it only once. But my sister wasnīt able to press the brake pedal strong enough with my 35s. The result was a bent tubular chrome front bumper. But for me it was ok. Time for a black steel bumper.

Wanna listen to my breaking axle shaft, diff bearing and ARB diff case...?

Only a friends Unimog was strong enough to get me out of there...

nicolas-eric 10-12-2009 03:42 PM
