Snowboard rack

I have read as much as possible on the available snowboard racks. I have not been too impressed with the 2" hitch rack or the tire rack. My problem with both is that I have 33x12.5 tires and dont believe either one will fit without some modification. I know the trailer hitch rack will work with an extender but at that point I would be worried about it being to far out from my jeep. I am also worried about damage from rocks or someone running into the back of me with $1000's of dollars of boards attached.

I was wondering if anyone has seen a roof rack that has been attached to a hard top? My 2005 LWB unlimited has a hard top that has ridges on the top of it. I dont believe they are big enough to have a roof rack attach to them but I have never owned a roof rack before.

Has anyone ever seen one of the roof racks bolted to a hard top? If so what needs to be done to seal it and make sure it is securely attached?

Anyone have any other ideas?

I know my snowboards should fit in the back of my jeep but I am planning a few winter trips and the extra room would really help out.

Please let me know if you have any good ideas!

Thanks

You could build your own snowboard rack like this (with a snowboard mount and not with a hilift mount). I built a license plate and rear working light mount on that way.

This is what I have and I love it:
Garvin Wilderness Safari rack for your jeep / roof rack
I bought it with it on it, but even if I had to cough up the cash it's totally worth it. A little extra road noise from the wind, but what TJ owner doesn't already love wind noise, and it makes it so I can fill up my seats and still carry the gear for the passengers. I even rigged up some cross bars and throw a rocket box on it during the winter months here in Oregon...

I could def build something like that but I think I decided id rather have my snowboard on top of my Jeep than behind it. Just worries me about having that much money behind my Jeep.

I def like the safari top and it also has an option to put mounts on it for a snowboard rack. i guess that is one good option. Does anyone have a picture of a LWB 04-06 Wrangler with one of these racks attached?

Still would be cheaper if I could come up with an idea to just attach a snowboard rack to the top of my hardtop.

any one else have any ideas?

I mean in all reality you could attach one to the hard top directly. IF your not going to sell the hard top and use it for the life I say attach a rack to it. drill some holes for the mounting points and underneath attach 1" wide metal to have a good secure point.

IE--

Take the front mounting point. underneath that first hole attach to the inside of the hard top a piece of flat stock metal that runs the roof all the way to the back mounting point. Then your bolts are not pulling directly against the hardtop. Then for the summer months take the snowboard rack off and put rubber flat plugs in the holes so no rain gets in. Done.

I run a HF aluminum receiver rack with a top of the line Toro blower in it and have yet to even be the slightest bit concerned about it.

Does your snowboard fit in the rack, or do u have a seperate yakima or thule rack attached to the top of the safari rack?? I am really interested in this exact rack, but want to make sure that I can lay my board down inside of it

bump for some updates

I have sstill been contemplating the best way to mount a snowboard rack. I am thinking the most reliable and easiest thing would be to just get a safari rack. It also will be the most expensive. Seems like there arent any jeep owners that have anything besides the tire mount or the hitch mount. Weird. Bump again to see if anyone has any other good ideas.

If I were to bolt a snowboard rack to my hardtop does anyone know what I would need to use to seal it? and if i were to take it off would i permantley have holes?

jdhallissey 10-17-2009 06:38 PM

yea you would have holes. That is why I said get rubber plugs and you would never notice them when the rack is off the truck.

So here are some pictures, sorry it took so long. I rigged up the cross bars using some uni-strut brackets and some extra rigid electrical conduit (10$). I have had a lot of weight up there before both in the rocket box, and distributed across the whole rack, never been a problem. Just rigged up a solid mount for my hi-lift jack this weekend...

If u wanna save the $ take 10 mins each way to take the bindings off and put all four boards across the roll bar and strap them down. after that good to go and plenty of $ for what ever else u wanna do.
