Painting my hardtop and bulldawg doors

Well I finally got around to paint my faded and scratched hardtop. I am hiding downstairs in my man cave as the paint fumes from the garage has the wife on a warpath. If I am still alive tomorrow I will post some pics as my garage is too dim for pictures. I am also considering bulldawg fiberglass doors to go along with my freshly painted top. has anyone tried these?

I really want to paint my top but just scared to. What kind of paint and prep work did you do?

chief100psu 10-13-2009 11:11 PM

First off sweet screen name - from da burgh myself. I used a ryobi detail sander on the flat parts and steel wool in the creases. I then mixed 25% mineral spirits with 75% rustoleum and sprayed it at 50psi. I think it looks awesome. I will post pics tomorrow when it is light.

Well I finally finished paint my hardtop and installed the bulldawg door - I used rustoleum flat black enamel thinned with mineral spirts and I think it turned out awesome. Also these bulldawg doors really are so much better than running plastic over the winter.

how much time and $$ did you put into the re-paint project ?
prep
sand
masking
set up
paint
dry
etc,,,,
dinner for two at wife's favorite restaurant ... LOL

chief100psu 10-30-2009 06:46 PM

prep - Just wiped down with mineral spirits once I finished sanding
sand - used a ryobi hand sander and steel wool in corners - maybe 1 hr total
masking - 1 hr
set up - not much
paint - 10 minutes per coat x 3- 1.5 hrs between coats
dry - it was dry enough to put on the jeep the next morning

dinner for two at wife's favorite restaurant ...- seems like I am in constant payment for my 'projects' LOL

So total it a 1/2 day project - really not that hard. Oh I forgot cost - black rustoleum enamel runs 7.50 at walmart, the mineral spirits (still have most of it left) was 10 bucks at lowes. Some painters tape maybe 3 bucks.

So for 15 bucks I think it was a deal.

hey thanks...

i liked the... "constant payment" ...answer the best !....LOL....

Looks great. Gonna be doing mine next spring. Its spice right now, but I dont like that color with the khaki brown paint. so gonna go black. I know what you mean about the"constant payment" everytime I wanna do something to the jeep, she rolls her eyes and I buy her something pretty, lol.

Hey, It looks great. Really good job.

cork1958 10-22-2010 11:47 AM

Yeah,
Nice combination with the color of the Jeep itself. Looks very good in the pics.

My top is slightly faded too. Seeing what yours looks like and what you had involved into doing it, I may even do mine myself!!

I'm NOT the worlds most mechanically inclined and have NO patience what so ever.

oIIIIIIo 10-22-2010 11:48 AM

Very nice! I like it. I will do mine soon.

I like those upper doors alot! If I had a hard top I'd definately take those over the factory full doors looks nice man!

JackdUp 04-22-2011 02:34 PM

Very well done! May I ask, what are Bulldog Doors? I see the upper half matches the rear hardtop, but are the doors an entire door assembly and are the upper doors removeable leaving the bottom half in place?

Its an aftermarket fiberglass upper door. They bolt to the top of the half door through the existing hole for the soft upper door rods. And yes they are removable.

Here is how they are installed : http://www.bulldawgdoors.com/pdf/BUL...structions.pdf

I replaced the bolts that came with mine, which had a screwdriver slot, to ones that I could use a ratched socket with. Much easier to put on and take off.
