New ECM. Advice on adding performance chip?

1987 Jeep YJ, 4 cyl, 2.5 L

I'm changing out my ECM due to some water damage.

Thinking of adding a performance chip, of the kind that's supposed to boost horsepower while reducing miles/gallon.

I understand the basic idea of how these chips work to coordinate with the ECM and sensors to improve efficiency of timing, but I have no personal experience with them. I'm also seeing a lot of the larger, more expensive chips, which seem like they replace the original ECM altogether, but a lot of these don't seem to be available for YJs pre 1993.

Can anyone offer some advice/recommendations for this kind of upgrade? Horror or success stories? Brand advice? What's available, in terms of one of the "fancy" chips, for an early year YJ? Will one of the less expensive "bolt on" variety work the way it should, with my 4 banger?

Love my jeep, but like I say, I'm learning as I go along.

Any and all advice appreciated.

Thanks!

That's the brand I keep seeing pop up. Seems like they have a variety of chips. What kind do you think is best?

I was looking at a "JET stage 1" earlier. Price is right, for sure.
