Louisville Area- Jeepers???

To all-

Thanks,

There's a Jeep shop in Louisville with the improbable name of "Moab OffRoad". They have a web site with a forum, and looks like lots of talk about local trail runs and destinations.
Moab Offroad's 4x4 Community - Index.

Great... Thanks for the Info!

Hello All, I'm moving to Louisville sometime towards the end of the month, I've recently bought my first jeep, a 95 YJ. Wondering if anyone would be willing to allow a newbie to tag along on some off roading. I'd also love to meet someone in the area who knows allot about Jeeps who can help me decide what I need to buy for my Jeep to have fun and be safe on the trails. Thanks!

Hey, I'm a new Jeep owner too... I got a 1997 TJ Sport a few weeks ago and would be interested in an off road adventure and some local advise too....
I live in the Fern Creek area and have stopped by Moab. The guys (I think the owner is Max?) were pretty helpful.

Hey Chris,

We'll be there, maybe sooner than later. They're trying to close that area to 4 wheelers and we're trying to counter. Max is working out a meeting that we may have on Wed. Jan. 12 to speak with someone close to the action. We're not sure where it will be yet. If you want to get involved either let me know or give Max a call, he can fill you in better than I can. Let everyone you know about this and lets see if we can fight it to keep it open.

Thanks,
John

I'm familiar with them trying to close down the Sand Lick area. Carb, Widowmaker, Devil's Brew, etc are all within that part. I talked to Charles Booth about it two or three months back and he didn't know anything about it. Kind of scary that they've kept it under the radar so much that even the locals are in the dark. Are you talking about meeting with someone out of the USFS? If so, you can count me in and will definitely bring some folks along. I'll give Max a shout early next week and see if we can coordinate something together with area businesses, clubs, etc.

Who is the "they" who is trying to close the area? To the big question is there a statewide group that incorporated the groups down in Harlan, those out in LBL, Louisville and Slade that can begin to coordinate? I have some experience with that level of dealing with government and bureaucrazy.

But the first element is to get all the players together and define what and who the threat is.

Right now I don't know if it's the National Parks System that is trying to shut it down but I do know that Mitch McConnell is aware of it. As posted above, the sad thing is even the locals haven't heard much if anything, which will cut into their business too. The government is saying that the 4-wheelers are leaving too much oil near and in the creek and doing too much property damage. (Heard that before, how many times). I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

The Kentucky Krawlers have a group and forum that posts up trail rides all the time. In fact there is a new years day trail ride at DTOR (close to you) that a bunch of folks have posted up about.

Depending on whether or not I have to work NYD, we are thinking of going.

I have friends on both sides of this discussion. I will take a peek as well.

Is there a state organization of local offroad groups? If not I would be more than willing to assist in organizing that effort to make that a reality. A singular, large voice will work better than lots of folks with good intentions trying individually.

JeepAddOns-Chris 12-30-2010 02:19 PM

SFWDA is about the closest you have to a coalition group. I'm not sure why clubs have not come together on issues like these, but it's been tried. Of course, a lot of people didn't believe it would actually happen. If they can close Tellico, they can close anywhere.

jshaffer 12-31-2010 08:21 AM

We've even sent emails to Tread Lightly and they say they can't help us. So like I said, I'll let you all know more as I learn more, hopefully within a couple weeks.

Thanks for your concern.

Fazed 12-31-2010 06:15 PM

Anybody going to DTOR tomorrow for the new years ride?

Hey McBear, yes, it's the USFS trying to shut it down. I sent you an email but in case you didn't get it, let me know and I'll send you the info on it. A group of us are having a meeting on it Wed. the 12th with Jeff Dozier filling us in. Thanks, John

McBear 01-09-2011 01:50 PM

I got the email. See you on Wednesday.

JeepAddOns-Chris 01-10-2011 12:44 AM

It's been posted on our forum and some guys from TORC will be there. See you all there.

Hey it looks like we got enough people in the Louisville area just right here on this thread to get together and plan a ride. Hmmmm, lets see.... we can start a club, have our meetings at one of the Hooter's in town and call the club................. Jeepin' for Hooters!.....LOL

DUKE15992 03-07-2011 07:59 AM

That doesn't sound like a bad idea.
