painting chrome is to much black to much

i have a 93 YJ that is black with a black hard top. it has rusty chrome rims. question is can i paint the chrome rims black if so how and is there a such thing as too much black? pics would be great. thanks in advance.

KBR97 10-25-2009 09:00 PM

not sure about the painting but I think black is a good look on jeeps/trucks..black the whole thing out.

jgano23 10-26-2009 07:51 AM

no, but any chrome is too much chrome :D.

do a google seatch for blacked out wrangler and see the results. it will give you an idea of how it will look.

I just painted my chrome rims. Centerline Hellcats, It can be done. Clean them up real good with soap and water. Then wipe down with thinner. THEN sand lightly with 150 grit. then wipe down again. Then use a self etching primer, put on 2 good coats. Then paint with want ever color you want. I used a hammered black cause my rims were a little pitted and this hides it well.

may give it a whirl thanks guys.

Agreeded! I'm embarassed for Jeeps with chrome. I had terrible chrome accents on my YJ when I bought it. Grill, around headlights, ect. I was painting it all black on my way home in my head. Then again my YJ is red. I just lightly sanded then primered and painted. I also had terrible rims I painted black too, worked pretty well and I just touched them up every so often. If your not sure about it, paint one first without sanding just to get an idea, if it's terrible just remove the paint. Never too much black!

Looks sick. Do it! I wish my jeep was black! I'd murder it out in a second. Lol

I agree, never too much black.

Jeepzcb09 10-26-2009 01:12 PM

black is the new chrome

Silverlion 10-26-2009 01:53 PM

Just curious. Why does no one like chrome anymore? ( other than the cleaning and polishing....and cleaning and polishing) Back in my High school days (sr 1991), It was all about the chrome. BTW, I'geting ready to black my wheels out due to rust and pitting. Too broke to buy new whees.

morphious 10-26-2009 02:21 PM

yeah i hear the wheel thing. I'm debating blacking mine out too. i have some left after i did my new rear bumper. and to answer the question no their can not be to much black.

NAVYCHIEF 10-26-2009 03:58 PM

that's what i'm talkin' about

NAVYCHIEF 10-26-2009 04:00 PM

while others like chrome

It's not that i don't like chrome. Chrome just doesn't seem to me like it should get muddy. A Jeep should get muddy. Therefor Jeep+Chrome just doesn't seem right to me.

Then again i also think chrome, and those crazy bright colors like solar yellow, orange, ect. look odd on vehicles unless it's expensive or fast. Have you ever seen those bright yellow cavaliers or civics with chrome wheels? They look ridiculous..But that's just my opinion.

Thinking about painting black in the spring.

vintageagain 10-28-2009 06:50 AM

don't forget a clear coat on the rims it'll help protect the paint. For best results try and see if you can get them powdered!

I like black also. Mine is dark green and everything else is blacked out.

irontom 10-30-2009 05:40 PM

The black rims are sweet. Getting mine powdered next week or so, I can't look at the chrome things. Its about $50-$100 to get it done for all the rims. Sanding included.

By the way - any one saw the program where they sanded the M1A1 Abrams? If its good enough for a MBT then it its good enough for my Jeep.

Rainycity 02-06-2010 10:45 AM

Mines already black, (but I do have chrome rims) do I get any points for that?..

yjkid95 02-06-2010 04:35 PM

That is the look I like too.
I have an Black '87 w/hardtop tinted windows, tires-31x10.5 black side out on black 15x8 rims. Not a lift yet.
It does throw alot of slop up on body when roads are bad. But the trade off is worth the beefy look. looks like a black bulldog coming at you.

I tried putting up a pic, but can't get it to upload for some reason.:crash: I'll get it, or get my daughter to do it.

Ghosthiker 02-12-2010 04:43 PM

Currently have gray interior/seats and top. I plan on a black-out, too.

Newbie here, so please excuse a repetitive question....

Where would one go to get rims powder-coated? Body shop? Industrial coating facility?

I was thinking of just painting my nasty chrome ones myself, but the thought of a more professional (and better looking) job is intriguing.
