Unimog Portal Axles
 
Hello.

I just wanted to show some pics of my friends Unimog portal axle conversions. That are the same axles that I bought some weeks ago.

that is a wicked set of axles. are they 4 wheel steer?

No only the front axle is steeable. But there are some people that install two Unimog front Axles on a Jeep.

These axles have gears around 6:1-8:1 and air lockers.

The Unimogs have stock tractor tires that are 44-48" high. I never heard of a boken axle. They ar eway stronger than all Dana axles that are available.
And compared to a D60 they have 7-8" more ground clearance.

I thought the offset clearance gain from the portal would be more significant. Looks like it's just a couple of inches.

Does the portal reduce the gearing still further, or are they straight-across ratio gears?

The springs look really far in-board, and they look really short. How far can this flex?

Not complaining - I like Unimogs a lot. They're just super expensive over here.

With the same tire size they would have about 9-10" more ground clearance than my D3/D44 combo.

The portals have a 2:1 reduction. And the have diffs something between 3:1 and 4:1.

They flex more than another friends TJ with a 5.5" RE longarm suspension.

Over here you find these axles very often in junkyards.

thats a pretty sweet conversion, those axles seem pretty narrow for a mog axle. are they out of the 404's? how does he not have crazy axle wrap being rear coil??

heres a mog ive been working on for years now.

Stock Unimog axles are wider. My friends shortened them.

I already bought them.
Now I have to shorten them and I also need disk brakes. I want to make that street legal.

shouldnt be too hard. the 416 doka has disc all the way around, 2 calipers per wheel upfront and 1 caliper per wheel in the back.

why not leave them full width???

Nico - is your friend using the torque tube from the Mog with a track bar?

Full width is too wide. The tires must be covered by the flares over here. And that wide flares would lok ugly.

No my friends use Mercedes G control arms with a G track bar.

those torque tubes are a pain in the ass. I had to rebuild one a few months ago. everything is crazy heavy.

Cool - yeah the torque tubes are a PITA. Just wondering if they did and how they got them to work.
