Need Input fairly quickly.

Ok..I am looking at 2 jeeps and am going to buy 1 or the other this week.

#1..2002 wrangler sport. 89k miles,auto,basically bare bones unit,some paint issues,stock everything.Hard top . my civic and 5500.00

#2 ..2004 TJ with 40k miles,auto,cruise,a/c....basically loaded. SMALL lift with crappy looking wheels and tires. NO damage at all. SOfttop..civic and 8000.00

WHICH ONE!!!!!!!!! :)

s3nt3nc3d 10-29-2009 09:56 AM

If you're looking at this for your daily driver/only vehicle...go with the 2004. Wheels are cheap...tires aren't so cheap, but in the grand scheme of things, they're not too horrible.

Plus you'll get a newer, much nicer vehicle with very low miles that will last you a long time.

jeeps

It depends on what you are going to be doing with it. Lots of off road or daily driver.02 has 3 speed auto and 04 has 4 speed auto better for highway use. Daily driver get the options, air cruse and so on you will be glad you did. Off road you wont need these and as far as paint goes you are goint to scratch it up off road anyway. Understand these are just my thoughts as in the end you will be the one to choose. Welcome to the family.:)

wpark013 10-29-2009 10:11 AM

I would go with the 2004 if it is gonna be your DD. Have fun with whichever one you get!

TJin46901 10-29-2009 10:14 AM

Thanks for the input so far guy..much appreciated. I am leaning towards the 04 simply becuase of the lower miles and excellent condition, and yes..it will go off road and will get scratched...glad to be on board with you guys, looking forward to lots of fun offroading. Think I am going to go with the RCII 4" lift with 33's right off the bat.

adkjoe 10-29-2009 10:17 AM

Not being able to see them I can't say but off of what you have provided I'd go with the 04 as well, whats your civic worth?

TJin46901 10-29-2009 10:19 AM

I have been offered anywhere from 3200.00 to 5000.00 on trade...big window there..just found out that the 04 is a rocky mountain edition also.

Haggle with them on the trade value... don't take the KBB trade-in price, especially if they won't flex much on the Jeep's price. KBB and the other value guides haven't been updated since the cash for clunkers stuff and right now used cars are going for a lot more than book value. For instance, my Dodge Dakota with transmission problems went for $2000. Book value for fair condition was $900.

I work for the owner of a Chrysler dealership and one of my good friends is a saleman out there (and the owner's grandson)...he said they can't even get cars at the auction for any less than book value. Usually they go for well UNDER book value.

catITguy 10-29-2009 10:27 AM

Based on info provided, Id go with the 04.

TJin46901 10-29-2009 10:28 AM

I am talking to the owner of the 04 at 1pm. It should be a done deal. WOO HOOO :)

jwells36 10-29-2009 12:31 PM

what are the two colors? That might make a difference to me.

Look up the Rocky Mountain Edition and see what it came with. It sounds good but it isn't much IMHO. You may be looking at the same one I did.

WxSarge 10-29-2009 02:11 PM

Take the '04!

jdub2k5 10-29-2009 02:55 PM

neither both are auto, both are stock

you can get a nice daily drive that someone has put in 8-10k in mods and also use it as a daily drive and purchase it for under bluebook

oldman 10-29-2009 06:18 PM

palehawaiian 10-29-2009 08:51 PM

Depend on who does your mechanical repairs to me. The older ones are always a little more simple.

I prefer to buy my vehicles as close to stock as possible...I try to avoid vehicles with a lot of mods at all costs. Yeah, it costs you more money to do it yourself, but when you do it yourself, you can make sure it was done right and no corners were cut.

Having just bought my first TJ in the last year I can tell you there are a couple of things I wish I had looked into more. I ended up with a 2000 Sahara model, had some extras I didn't really care for, but was an overall good deal. Check your rear differential and make sure its a dana 40, also look at the tag and see how its geared otherwise you might be re-gearing as soon as you lift it. I ended up with a dana 35 and 3.07 gears... sucks for me. Neither of these are a big deal if you have the cash to spend, but I'm a student on a small fixed budget. I will say, no matter what jeep you end up with, its a blast to drive your hobby everyday!

Jeepzcb09 10-30-2009 12:04 AM

get the 04

I have to agree with you big time on this. A lot of times you end up buying something that looks really cool, but then in the long run you find that the previous owner did a half-a$$ed job at the work. I enjoy doing my own work and seeing it in progress.

Should be getting the 04 this weekend...sweet!

I read through the thread pretty quick, but you mentioned they were auto, but you didn't mention if they were 4 or 6 cylinders. Don't buy either one if they are 4 cylinders. Get a 6. You also mention they are black.... not your first choice... but....

Dude, I looked for over a year, at every jeep I could, until I bought the one I did. Don't settle. If you are like me, you will keep this thing for a long time, and will make it yours. If you already don't like the color, just wait, you will learn to hate it.... pick your two favorite colors, and start searching ebay, and cars.com, or even auto-trader.com, and look at everything under the sun. You can find a deal in no time....

I'm assuming one of these you are looking at is at 'what a deal motors', the black 02 with the hard top..... nice jeep, and it's a 6 cylinder, with auto. The hard top might be nice for those indiana winters.... they are asking $9995 for it. You mentioned your civic and 5500? What year is your civic, how many miles, etc....?

TJin46901 10-30-2009 10:48 AM

Both jeeps are 6cyls...granted neither are my fav. color but I have been searching for almost a month and all I find is overmileaged junk that ppl want HUGE money for...and I cannot travel the US looking at them..this one is close and is very nice..black isnt my 1st pick but is far from my last..I will end up murdering it out....

Well, whatever you decide... some buying advice, which you may know... buy on the last day of the month..... they track sales by month, and they will more than likely deal today or tomorrow before they will starting on sunday, which is nov 1st. Offer them your civic, and 1000 less than they want in cash... and tell them, tax, tag, title, out the door.... be firm.

TJin46901 10-30-2009 10:56 AM

The 02 was from a dealership..04 is off a private owner. He rally wants/needs the civic ..2 new babies...so to me it seems like we are borth getting a good deal from all of the prices I have seen.
