No more chrome!

It was a beautiful day on sunday so I decided to get rid of the last remaining pieces of chrome on the jeep, I hate chrome. Perfect day for some spray painting.

niiiiice

burton160w 11-02-2009 09:00 AM

 I like it a lot. I'm going to be taking all the chrome off my car (tube bumpers, light bezels, etc.) and be doing the same thing this weekend. Looks really good though.

specbill 11-02-2009 09:03 AM

Looking good....'like the no chrome look on some TJ's but can also get behind those with some as well....it all depends on how the whole package is put together....

Beast Skills 11-02-2009 10:41 AM

yeah i still have all of my chrome right now. i'm thinking about statrting to paint some of it here and there.

adkjoe 11-02-2009 12:07 PM

Thanks, it looks so much better now.

I used krylon fusion in gloss black, sure beats $25 for blacked out ones from quadratec.

Yaezu 11-02-2009 03:23 PM

Me too! I'm 99.9% done...

Yeah I don't like the chrome much either. The first thing I did was paint the headlight bezels. Then I went for the wheels. I found some used grill inserts that were chrome and I painted those as well.

adkjoe 11-03-2009 08:15 AM

Did you rattle can the rims? What did you use?

mrcarcrazy 11-03-2009 08:26 AM

to those who've painted the bezels. Some of my "chrome" is peeling off. Should I remove all the chrome and then use a product like Krylon fusion? or is there a better way?

I would just hit it with some scotch brite and get all the loose flaky chrome off and then just spray over it. Don't use sandpaper the plastic is really soft and it will look like crap. I used krylon fusion gloss black. I wouldn't worry about getting all the chrome off just the loose stuff that's peeling.

mudslinger150 11-03-2009 08:42 AM

Mrcarcrazy,

i would maybe use a filler or self etching primer first on the bezels 2 coats. That will help to fill any flaky spots or any pitted area, then blast it with a few coats of your paint.

Probably not a bad idea but that chrome is so thin you probably wouldn't even notice the peeled spots but I see what your saying...

mrcarcrazy 11-03-2009 08:54 AM

thanks guys. I'll give it a go when I find time.

joemd60 11-03-2009 12:28 PM

Mine held up pretty good, I just sanded them and put about 4 coats of paint on them. It was a hot summer day so I let them bake in the sun between coats, so I think that helped and I used krylon fusion to, only flat black. I eventually want to do the parking lenses and reflectors.

Jeepzcb09 11-03-2009 02:17 PM

Hey looks great! Ive been wainting to do this on mine but all i have is Rust-o-lium gloss black, would this work?

DougTimme 11-03-2009 03:38 PM

x2 shit u got me there!

Jeepczb09 - you really want to use a paint for plastic, it's only a couple bucks at any auto store, but yes it is gloss black.

2000SEWrangler 11-03-2009 04:46 PM

the headlight bezels are just held in by the 4 screws and just pop out then right??

Yes. I used rustoleum black hammered paint. It was fairly simple to do, light sand, primer and then a few coats of paint. It's held up really well. I touched up a little after the new tires were installed. I've gotten lot of compliments for them.

They look great, I would love to do that but I'm worried about how well they hold up. I don't want to have to re- spray them every time I get off the trail ya know.

mudslinger150 11-04-2009 07:40 AM

adkjoe, i did this to my nissan hardbody. I used SEM flexable paint in Landau black, i applied about 3 coats and that truck is always stuck someplace, paint has never chipped and its almost 2 years later.
