Is this a joke?

I was in the builders area and got a pop up box saying I'm the 10,000th person and to click the box. No way in hell I'm doing that and getting my computer jacked or crashed. Is this legitimate or did you guys get hacked?

tiny terror 11-07-2009 10:30 PM

Not legitimate. Could you be a little more specific as to what it said or looked like?

amy 11-07-2009 10:41 PM

Definitely not legit. I was just in the Builder's Corner twice, to see if I got a pop-up like you describe. I even tried logging out to see what I got, but I didn't get anything but the normal ads. Could it be something on your computer, Rastaman69?

I got it yesterday scroll all the way to the bottom.

its happened to me a couple times this week. not just on the builder thread though. its a lil flashy message in the ad space at the bottom of the page

some of the ads in the ad spaces expand when your mouse scrolls over them. How are ad's selected to appear on this website? Are they screened somehow or can there be anything with who knows what on the other end if we click on them? Just curious.

Ahhh, I see now (answering my own question). "Ads by Google"... pretty slick. They are mostly content based upon the website (wranglers/jeeps/cars/trucks/etc in this case). Sounds like google probably filters the ads of any harmful links.

"Ads by Google appear throughout the web on sites that use Google's AdSense program to show ads. We aim to make these ads as useful and interesting to you as possible. Sometimes the ads we show you are based on the content of the page you are viewing. Other times, the ads are intended to reflect your interests which are based on the content of the webpages from participating websites that you've previously visited."

Yep. It says you are the 10,000 viewer or something like that and to click on the box to receive your prize.

Sorry about that. We do some adjusting of the google ads when we see something that doesn't fit. I wasn't aware that google was doing 3d ads now, but doesn't surprise me.

Firefox with Adblock plus and you'll never see it. Heck even use NoScript and you'll for sure never see it haha.

No joke - no pop-ups here. If you ever see pop-ups we want to know about them, including the URL of the offending ad. Our ads are fed through google and every once and while a bad one slips through. The sooner it's reported, the sooner it's history.:)

Got this pop up when I clicked to go into the YJ forum this morning. Not the first time it has occured.
