Looking for my first jeep!!! :)

Hey gang. I'm new here but hopefully I'll have a jeep by the weekend so I can really join the club! I'm selling my 2001 4runner tonight for $6500 so I will have around that to spend on a jeep. I'm looking for the TJ year range so what are some things I need to look at and/or ask about when looking over one before buying? I have read some threads on here and gained some good knowledge, but is there anything you would tell me to keep an eye out for that may be common on these? Thanks gang, and I can't WAIT to get one. I have wanted a jeep ever since I knew what a jeep was!!! :)

Oh, I'm in Arkansas and looking for a I6 with mo more than 120k miles with hard top. Doesn't really matter on auto or 5-speed so if you know anyone in the area with a good one for sale in my range, shoot me a PM! :D

Thanks!

Welcome and enjoy the process of finding your new TJ. My guess is you'll find something in the '97 -'99 range and in my book they are all good for the kind of money you are talking.. as long as you don't buy abused, neglected or poorly modified stuff. Best advice for finding a good used Jeep is be patient and do your homework. If you have mechanical experience around vehicles use it to the max to make sure all the key pieces of the rig are solid. Study how it was maintained and how it was used. The closer the seller is to being the original owner, and the closer the rig is to stock, the easier your home work will be.
Don't rush to buy and don't hesitate to post info on what you are looking at on this forum and ask for feed back...you'll get plenty...it may or may not be what you want to hear but it will definitely help you think through your deal better.
Good Luck and have fun!

Square headlights are so much prettier! Just kidding! Good luck finding your TJ, I know you'll love it.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to look at this one tonight. Its a '99 with I6, auto, and 120k miles. Has a 4" lift and 33's. Comes with Bikini top too.

Here are pictures. Guy has it listed for $7000. Sounds about right?

Anything stick out to you that I need to look at?? I'm not worried about the rust spots on the bumper and step as I can fix those easily. He said the interior is in really good shape and there is not rust on the body and the paint is still good.

the pictures are nice of the Sport TJ !

Good Luck on your purchase......

Those tube steps and bumpers may be worse than you think - the rust starts on the inside.

He throws that much stuff in the back of their Jeep AND has a good interior? Hah!

I really like green, BUT it's the hardest color to match with a top (most tops are black, most green jeep owners like "spice"). That's a very minor point, but you asked!

There's a header bar for the Bikini top that people sometimes forget to include - ask for that.

Price is maybe slightly high for that many miles. Not rip-off high, but slightly high. At least here in Colorado (where there are a LOT of Jeeps).

Have fun!

I just pulled the carfax on this jeep and it has had a new transfer case @ 21,303 miles, new transmission @ 34,550 miles, front end accident on 5/02/2001. I guess if all this was fixed correctly (and it appears it has been a while ago and no problems since that time) would you be very alarmed by this?

specbill 11-10-2009 10:31 AM

This one makes me nervous....for sure it is not a great deal at 7K . The carfax is a flag. That is a lot to think about (wreck - transmission - transfer case) at only 23K miles. Granted, a lot of miles have passed since then. But, this one does not show a super amount of care or high end parts...note the wheels, tire brand, rust on bumbers, crap in back etc. which really makes me worry about the quality of that 3 inch lift..who did it...how was it done, what quality is it...
Overall, be real careful on this one..I think it has been ridden hard and I question the maintainance level. There may be a deal here at a much different price, but really study this one carefully. Take someone with you that has a critical eye and knows what to look for. Good job finding a hard top, 6 cyl and auto.
Good luck..be patient..there is a good TJ out there for you and you will find it.

Its hard to be patient when rifle deer season start on Saturday and I am off all of next week....and I'm vehicle less right now. ha But I am and will be patient and if I have to bum a ride with someone next week, I will. And yeah I agree, I'm kind of nervous about this one too. But I'm still going to look at it and I'm taking a friend who rebuilds jeeps and knows a lot more than I do about them. One thing I noticed while looking at the car fax is that one owner had it for nearly 4 years after all the work was done and the accident and put nearly 50k miles on it and didn't have one problem with it according to carfax. I guess everything was replaced corectly, but still, I'm kind of leery of it. Doesn't cost anything to go look at it though I don't guess. :) Thanks again for everyones thoughts!

Anyone else?

Sounds like a major accident.. I would walk. If nothing else the value should be closer to 5k. Those are some major parts to be replaced, must have been one heck of an impact. Also what ever jeep you get look for a dana 44 rear, it will have a square metal fill plug vs a round plastic one.

Thanks for the info!!

I just remembered the dude told me he had to replace the engine mounts when he got it. Know it looks like I know why!! ha Still, I think I'm going to go look at it. The wife and I will go, get something to eat and enjoy the nice drive in the weather and take a quick look at it just for the heck of it. But, I do think I'm going to let this one pass on by and keep looking. Any of you around Arkansas (memphis and dallas areas too) if you see one that you think I might like, shoot me a PM. :D

most people worry about wrecked cars, if it was fixed and they can prove it thats just a chance to get it for 6k

Also kind of what I'm thinking. There have been no problems on this jeep since the work was done with the transmission, transfer case and accident all before 2002. No problems at all since that time so it appears everything was repaird correctly. Man I have really been going back and forth on this one.

well it doesent look to bad, but i agree you should get it around 6,000, and thats if it runs flawlesly!! Test the 4wd, but if you dont get this one just be sure not to get the 4cyl, and hold out for a good deal! I serched for 8 months for my jeep and it wasnt perfect when i got it but it has cleaned up very nicly and im still adding mods as i get more money, so just be paitent

Don't settle for the first one you drive!!!!!! I drove probably 10 -15 until I found the one that felt comfortable and drove the way I wanted. Look around you will find the ONE that you want. Good luck and welcome to the family-----you will never be the same. :wavey:
