how to identify which gears to buy

Still trying to get gear smart, and I'm stumped again. My front axle is a HP D30 with solid axles in my 09 Unlimited. I'm trying to buy some 4.1 gears for it and just can't figure out which to buy. How do I know if I have a reverse, or straight cut or ??? And will the Rubicon D44 front axle gears fit it? :banghead:

I strongly recommend you find a reliable 4x4 gearing shop in your neck of the woods..They not only know what gears to use but for sure they know how to install them..;)

front axles use a reverse cut because they're facing opposite of the rear.

ring and pinion from a D44 will not fit a D30. you have to get D30 reverse sets for your front D30. and when you have under 3.73 stock, if you go to 3.73 or higher, you need a new case insert also.

Not true. Reverse cut gears are for HIGH PINION axles, such as that in the Dana30's in the JK's. And it's entirely different Dana30 than a TJ's... same as the rear, although a Dana44, it's a completely new one.

This is a picture of a standard low pinion gear set for a Dana30.

Notice how the teeth are facing?

so you can put a "r" reverse gearset in the rear axle?

No... only if you have a High Pinion Dana30 rear, which doesn't exist.

It has nothing to to with location, it's all about which way they are cut.

You can have a Dana60 rear end (low pinion) and have a Dana60 front end (low pinion) and they will use the same gear set, front or rear it doesn't matter so long as they are both low pinions.

When you have a high pinion, the teeth are cut in reverse because the pinion is on the top. It's confusing, but visually, you'd see as that's why I posted the picture.

Ok- ignore just about everything said above.
JK ring gears run thicker than ANY other Dana 30 and Dana 44 setup before. You can ONLY run JK-specific ring and pinion gears. Any decent gear vendor will have them available. Talk to the guys at 4ws.com They know what they're doing- Mark W.
