"A Jeep thing ..." - what is this for you?
 
What should we consider calling "A Jeep thing"? Something dealer/Chrysler will never fix or improve? To me it is water leaks happened in soft top or hard top Wranglers, it is leaking in any Jeep I know owned by friends or co-worker. It is also low mpg no meter how I drive. What else could be called "A Jeep thing"? Something that having no cure for obvious problems on wheels? :)

Don't get me wrong, I like my Wrangler, however I would like to know what else is "A Jeep thing" and so specific to it?

Chrysler's sh!t build quality, hiring second rate engineers, employing lazy union workers that could give a rats ass about their job (quality control) and their general horribleness are all part of "its a jeep thing." If it wasn't for Jeep, Chrysler would be bankrupt.

Wow. How about 32,000 miles without a single problem. Driven through torrential downpours without ever a leak. Change the oil, filters, check the tires and drive it; nothing else needed.

On sunny days, drop the top and cruise.

Oh, and don't forget, enough easy mods available to make it your own.

My 2012 had 23K without any problems and my 14 doesn't have "problems." However, my 2012 had a timebomb head, and my 14 has waterfalls in the dash, and rattling door latches. If I buy a brand new vehicle and need to fix something, then the QC sucks. That doesn't mean Im not happy with the vehicle, but I still maintain that Chrysler is a POS car company that (besides the GC,Viper and the Wrangler) builds sh!t vehicles.

Paying a lot of money for a clunky, creeky, squeeky vehicle..

And loving every freaking moment of it.

If any other car I owned made some of the noises my JK makes, I'd be worried.

agred, but still love it and I've had every one of the common problems except the head so far, mine had the waterfall and it too the dealer several bleeding sessions to fix it

Another thing you left out about Jeep is the shat dealer service: It's ALWAYS going to take multiple visits to fix stuff at the dealer. 1) One visit so they believe you and order the parts, 2) next to drop it off for the repair, 3) then another to bring it back for what they messed up and didn't put back right, and then 4) finally a follow up to complete the initial repair

Because it's not a critical issue, Im not going to bring it to the dealer. They will definitely break something else or cause another problem. I'll just deal with it for now and handle it myself later on. Unless it is something critical (like a ticking head) I don't let dealers touch my vehicles, even if it costs me some money.

This thread is not about "I don't have issues ...", even I am sure you are having them too. It is more about - why nobody complain to corporate abusing our love to Jeep and why everybody is quiet? Is it OK if water leaking from top will leak into radio and short circuit it? I personally know at least 4 friends and co-workers with leaks from hard top or soft top, all saying the same "Jeep thing..", what is this? Magic keyword? Hypnosis? :)

Will Chrysler Financial give up if you don't pay for Wrangler for example?

I would agree in general besides union, all parts are made in China these days and they are not in union :) but they are don't give a shi. about you or me or something called quality.

Disagree. All other manufacturers including Honda or toyota use chinese parts. There is one common denominator in the American car production, and its unions. Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Hyundai, etc that build more cars in the US than Chrysler, Ford or GM don't have quality control problems like the big 3 do, and they don't use union labor. You will NEVER EVER find a honda or a toyota with casting sand left over in their cooling systems.

They are selling wranglers literally faster than they can build them. Any auto manufacturer would give up their firstborn to have the wrangler formula. Hell, Chrysler can put the wrangler out with a missing wheel, and still sell them. They have no reason to improve anything. That is why Im praying someone else (ie Toyota) decides to take a bite out of the wrangler pie. Build a truly comparable vehicle, and you are going to see a lot of people jump ship. I don't have brand loyalty to any manufacturer. I think people that buy a certain make of vehicle solely because of the make are nuts. I own a wrangler because its the best (and only really) vehicle in it's class. If toyota came out with a solid axle, 4 door vehicle that is equal to the rubicon in performance, but has toyota build/reliability, I'd be gone tomorrow. I love my wrangler, I really do, which is why I just bought another one, but Im being honest. If Chrysler decides to give the wrangler IFS and basically cave to all the new mandates, you are going to see wrangler sales plummet. I had 2 BMW M3s that were fantastic to drive, but broke all the time. I spent most of my ownership time in loaner cars. I havent bought a BMW since. My s2000 is 10 years old, and not so much as a lightbulb went out in that thing. Building a quality product doesn't mean the product has to be expensive, its just that someone has to give a sh!t.

How did the "Jeep thing" thread become a "Bash Chrysler" thread?

There are a number of other Chryslers in my family, including a Dodge Journey, a Town & Country and a Caravan and all have been doing really well. After driving several crossovers (rentals and the likes), including the massively-overpriced Ford Edge, the Journey is honestly the only crossover I can stand to drive. It's just a lot of fun. If, god forbid, I had to own a mini-van, it'd be JKU--I mean a Town & Country.

Chrysler also produces the only V8 rear-drive sedan you can get for under $30,000, and they're very nice.

Every single company having issues, even my second car/MB does. Problem is no reaction on obvious issue and no reaction on every single Wrangler is leaking water. It is my third Jeep but i never been embarrassed as I been in Wrangler while driving someone after rain explaining "Jeep thingy.." waterfalls ... and paying finance bill next day ...

For myself, 'its a jeep thing' has to do with anything that induces eye-rolling either from myself or from a passenger. For example:

-the rattles and vibrations on a new vehicle with 7K miles. I roll my eyes. Its a jeep thing.
-the urge to steer onto rocks instead of go around them. Passenger rolls their eyes. Its a jeep thing.

A jeep thing means a lot of things to me. It's my answer to everything. "Why is my bank account empty?" "Why am I replacing parts on a 14k miles vehicle?" "Why would I join a forum to talk about the vehicle I drive everyday with people I will never meet?" And most importantly "Why am I constantly checking the weather to see if it's going to rain?" A jeep thing has nothing to do with Chrysler. A Jeep thing is based on the activities you do with your jeep that you would never do with any other vehicle, and that NO ONE will understand.

Than it should not be used as term explaining water leaks for example, it is fun part ...!!!

Well, "its a jeep thing" is generally used to describe a common problem with jeeps that has no real solution. Rattles, squeaks, leaks, etc. People get tired of dealing with them and having dealers make the problem worse, so they just "deal with it" by saying it's a Jeep thing. Might be ok if the jeep cost $12K, but at (in my case $43,155 sticker price) the current prices, it is not acceptable.

Well, the dealership issues is one reason I purchased CarMax's 100,000 mile warranty when I purchased my JK. If Chrysler won't deal with it, I know CarMax will. So that brings me some comfort.

I kind of expected rattles, squeeks, clunks, etc with my JK before I even bought it, tho. It's not a super-refined street vehicle. It's not a Benz..tho for the price you could get a Benz...I bought it to be what it is. Rugged, impractical and fun.

100% my point, it is abuse on love to something (Wrangler). People who is protecting company on this are making this situation even worse.

Anybody hear about the new Bronco Ford is suppose to come out with? From what i've read it is being brought back to compete with the Wrangler. It looks really bad ass but I do not think a production date has been set.

I hope Land Rover Defender is back to US, it would be something I will buy after JKU.

The only thing "not modern" on a Wrangler is the suspension. I would let a few creeks and squeaks slide but unfortunately, the problems on a wrangler have nothing to do with ruggedness. The motor is modern, the electrical system is extremely modern, the interior is modern, etc. There is simply no excuse for leaky tops, waterfalls in dashboards, casting sand in the cooling system, a bad clockspring (going on 8 years now), etc. All the wrangler problems have nothing to do with ruggedness.

I'm mixed about the Bronco. It'll case one of two things to happen.

They'll price it with the Rubicon or even more expensive and it'll drive Wrangler prices up, because they'll know they can get away with it.

They'll price it very low and cause Wrangler prices to drop thru the floor and take all of our resale value away.

A huge reason many of us hate chrysler is their dealer network, and their general "blame the customer" policy.

They are a huge reason I never bought the maxcare plan for my 14, I just don't trust them. One guy actually had a dealer blame his headunit for a drivetrain problem. Every other manufacturer that I have owned have at least ONE guy at the service department that actually knows cars, so you can reason with them. My dealership decided to replace a $3000 rear axle on my 2012 for no reason (I complained I heard a noise that was coming from the front end, turned out to be nothing)....Wasted a week dealing with it, left the dealer, surprise surprise...noise still there. Told the service manager the tech just cost Chrysler $3000 for no reason.

Oh, and one more thing, the reason why you will often see me bash chrysler on this board (and all boards) is pretty simple...Im a moderator on s2ki.com, which is an s2000 forum. At one point, it was the 75th largest forum on the net. I know for a fact that Honda monitors the forum, and I know that Chrysler monitors this forum. The more people b!tch about their problems, the more people that say they will buy another product if another one came to market (ie a Defender, a Bronco, etc), the more they would be inclined to listen and change.

Buying a $33,000 vehicle and within a year replacing the entire suspension, wheels, tires, lights, bumpers, fenders, driveshafts, therefore increasing the price of said vehicle to well over $40,000, then taking said vehicle off-road and breaking stuff only to replace them with more expensive stuff, and having a huge ass goofy grin on your face the whole damn time.

It's a jeep thing.....you wouldn't understand

Absolutely, we are getting Bluetooth and GPS, computer and multiple other advanced parts and technologies in Wrangler. Why if all we do with Jeep is crawling on rocks? ;) it is just funny to listen all these die hard Wrangler lovers who use to drive Willys 60 years ago. It could be much better with exact drivetrain and ruggedness if Chrysler could care about customers.

I have a 2013 that I got last Nov. It has just over 13000 miles. I've not had 1 issue. I made a appointment for the N28 recall that has not been done yet and I'm on a list to have it done. Jeep will only let the parts dept at the dealer order the part once ever 2 weeks. So I may get it done before 2014.

You can put bluetooth, GPS, power windows, door locks, a fancy touch-screen stereo in a Conestoga wagon and it'll still creek, whine and clunk like a Conestoga wagon..

Just because they're packing all kinds of technology into a Wrangler doesn't mean it's going to drive, sound or wear like a BMW, even if it costs as much as a BMW..

I do agree that Chrysler could have better customer support if so many people are having these issues, but as far as my Jeep being exactly the way it is now, I wouldn't change it.
