I am having the same problem and the shop is gunna charge me an ass ton for a new box and all kinds of crazy labor. Same thing the steering wheel tilts 3 inches or so on each side of 90degrees (straight up) before engaging. When it engages it responds perfectly.

I've never had this problem but I think the easiest way to figure out where the problem is would be to have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you observe the steering shaft going into the steering box. Then observe the pitman arm coming out of the steering box also while someone is turning the wheel back and forth.
