Where is rain coming in at?

Aight, so I haven't driven the ole yj in a couple of days and its been raining. I got in it today, to run to the store, and the radio doesn't show any power. I looked right below the radio, on the trans hump, and saw water. U gotta be kidding me. Where would water be coming threw? Windshield frame where the molding meets the tub? I'm guessing that's where it came from but if anyone has any suggestions post up, bc I'll be outside taking my cd player and seeing if maybe the water blew the fuse on the head unit.

ygohome 12-26-2009 04:55 PM

in my 89 yj it would come in from the upper corner where the door meets the windshield frame. it then ran down a would run along the bottom of the dash.

before I realised that I tried silicone along the seal under the length of the windshield. It only made an ugly gluey mess. didn't help at all. But maybe I simply lack in sealant skills. I later changed out my doors for some bestop soft doors and they kept the rain out. I didn't get the doors for that reason... just happened to fix the problem.

my recomendation is to invest in towels and pray that it doesn't rain alot. lol. i fail on this reply

take out the rubber plugs in the floor. rain in,rain out. drilling a few extras won't hurt. check your air intake drain hose. it is under the hood on the firewall just inboard of the battery. it comes out and straight down. there is a spring on the end. squeeze the spring. also, pour some hot water into the intake(the opening just in front of the windshield) to clean out the hose.picture to follow. on the pic it is just to the left of the dipstick on the firewall. ignore parts with circles and arrows. the cowl seal, where the windshield folds, can also let in water if it is old and nasty.

Meatwad 12-26-2009 05:46 PM

See what I don't understand is that It's getting water in at my dash while I'm not driving. Hard top with full hard doors. I've drain any that's come in when it's rained. From the floor boards.

NAVYCHIEF 12-26-2009 05:52 PM

that is probably from the cowl area if its in the dash.

And the joint between the hood cowl and the windshield frame mount. Filled at the factory with seam sealer and painted over, now probably a gap with some rust and a great way for water to get in.

I swear man, this jeep has given me hell ever since I bought it. From a leaking radiator to the absolute worst gas mileage I've ever gotten. And it's a 4cyl. I mean I had better gas mileage from any of my muscle cars that I've owned.

jeepers92 12-31-2009 12:26 PM

Hey meatwad, they all take a little loving in the begining however off roading and summers topless make it all worth while!!!!!!!!:D as far as the gas, its a jeep and they use alot! especially if they are lifted and have wide tires.

The Chief is right. I fried a couple radios in my old CJ until I changed the cowl seal.

It's a Jeep you either love'em or you hate'em......most of the time I hate 'em but I wouldn't drive anything else.

morphious 12-31-2009 02:03 PM

^ amen to that u hate that u love them so much

Blackbear79 01-01-2010 08:00 PM

i agree with navychief, i had water comin in at the same spot, look up under the dash to see if the drain hose is connected.

deetz 01-02-2010 03:06 PM

i just bought a boat radio lol. and pulled my floor... wait my plugs rusted out long ago doh.. mine leaks like crazy too, i figured it was from the cowl, il fix it when i change tubs this spring

Meatwad 01-14-2010 11:08 AM

This whole jeep needs new seals. Full steel doors are whistling at me, cowl leaks, lift hatch leaks (steel horse HT BS) Man I hope this pays off. Like you guys said, love 'em or hate 'em. Just reminds me of chrysler products. Great motors, too bad everything around them is junk.

huber15 01-14-2010 01:34 PM

I had the same problem in my 93 i took the hose of buy the dipstick as posted prevesly it was full of mud and crud. cleaned it out and havent had that much water since. just alittle coming in from top corner of door

Alot of us are driving these old jeeps; mine is an 88 yj and leaks under the dash somewhere. I have examined all the sources mentioned on these boards and am still at a loss. However, driving this thing gives an old man much pleasure and is a small irritation I can tolerate.

I have learned over the past six months the meaning of "it's a jeep thing".

RedWrangler 01-15-2010 08:34 AM

Amen to all above. Mine leaked from the cowl seal. Replaced it and ran a bead of silicone(RTV) along the top and bottom. That stopped the deluge into the dah. I've fried several head units. The latest is a marine unit, so hopefully, even if I do get more leaking, it will survive. Mine also leaked around the windshield until I replaced the rusty old frame. I have replaced the windshield about 8 times in 16 years. The flat glass doesn't take rock hits very well. It also leaks around the doors sometimes, but this just makes a puddle on the floor. I keep sponges on board (Kayak Trick) and have removed the plugs from my drain holes. The fresh air intake drain hose definitely needs regular cleaning. That's a 30 second fix for alot of the water that comes in through the vents. I suspect everyone has received a wet foot while making a turn after a rain storm. Just try to get the moisture out after it comes in, and hopefully it will keep the rust to a minimum.

Now you're starting to understand the whole "It's a Jeep thing"

My yj leaks where the windshield meets the hardtop need to get a seal kit and all around the tub...another seal kit and it also makes all sorts of noises but i still love it and would trade it for nothing. Its fun to drive and is a blast in the summer with the top and doors off i dont care what your driving almost nothing compares to it plus the ladies love wranglers
