Viking Fast Back

viking fast back soft top

In looking for something a little different than just a RAT, came across these. Anybody used it? Fits directly of the roll cage. Any other top out there that would give a bit of a "different" look for my 97?

gajeepdawg 01-05-2010 08:45 PM

Never mind!lol Man all this info already on the forum. Im not going to be able to post any questions!

I was wondering if this style top decreases any head room in the back seat...

Geoff@Bestop 01-05-2010 08:57 PM

Decreased headroom?
Maybe a little. But not to much. There used to be a real "fastback" style top that would really chop down at an angle. But that was on the old-style roll bars on CJs. You still see them every now and then. Never all that popular.

gajeepdawg: You'll find more info than you probably want on that topic. I'm a little biased, and think you should go Trektop. But with those two choices, you picked the good ones. Both are quality tops.

Actually I am leaning a bit towards the TRek now, mainly cause of price and coming with everything I need. I will probably pm you with some questions this weekend when I have a little more time.

You may want to look into this Rampage just came out with an exact copy of the Viking (or is distributing the Viking) Bowless Soft Top by Rampage and Other Jeep Parts and Jeep Accessories by 4 Wheel Drive Hardware http://www.rampageproducts.com/pdf/rampage_softtops.pdf but a lot cheaper than the Viking

A lot of people have the Viking and like it.

jwm1986 01-06-2010 09:05 AM

I never looked into those much but now I'm thinking about getting the Viking or Rampage top for this coming season. So can I use the wind shield header, door surrounds, and tail gate bar from my OEM soft top on these? Or are they different...

You'll need a new wind shield channel and reuse your door surrounds and tailgate bar.

sonofabeach 01-06-2010 09:16 AM

Looks like a good top if you don't have the framing hardware and need to save some $$$

terrible2 01-06-2010 11:34 AM

get the california fastback or soft top ha.

It is a good top, but you still need to keep in mind that you need the rear bar, the l/r latches, door surrounds, and those window bars. Finding those individually will run you the same price as a complete hardware at a junker.

Yes, more then Geoff wants to admit I think :p it's nothing significant, but if the person who sits back there already has a dome piece that is higher then the lowest part of the sports bar, then the roof may hit his head.

The biggest problem with the Viking and Trektop are the fact they aren't convertible tops that can be easily folded down like the soft top. They look boss as hell, but I want a softop that will just be up when it rains. Also, the Viking has removable rear windows, the Trektop does not - BUT the top retracts like a sunroof.

I'd go Trektop or the Rampage, but right now Quadratec is selling the Trektop on sale CHEAP.

InfernoGirl 01-06-2010 12:01 PM

Burton, how much more involved is it to put the top up/down than the factory soft top? I can't get the zippers or hard clippy things on my top by myself as it is. (I know, I'm a wimp).

Jason, let me know how you like it. I love the way the fastback tops look. My concern is how easy/hard they are to take down. I love being topless, but I want to be able to put it up/down quickly and easily. Especially if this summer is as rainy as last summer :D

You can't do it. The Trektop's fold back like a sunroof (the canopy feature), but don't fold all of the way down like the soft tops do. The Viking doesn't have this roll-back feature, but the rear-windows come off.

Neil F. 01-06-2010 12:48 PM

Ok, you are a girl and.........

Ok, I understand that it doesn't fold down. But how long does it take to remove/replace? I have a trail top for emergencies, but I need to know if it is really a PITA to r/r or if it is a doable thing.

Geoff@Bestop 01-06-2010 01:56 PM

The Trektop doesn't have bows attached to the sports bar that help lower it down. But it's super easy to remove the header and drop it down. It's almost like the emergency top.

The Sunroof fold-back feature is only available on the 4-door model.

anybody know a link that shows instructions on putting the viking soft top on? it came with my 02 tj and i was thinking about switching tops but im not sure how to put it on.

Send my regards to Quadratec :p

Bigstonz 01-06-2010 05:26 PM

On a relatively warm day, after you've done it a few times, you can get the Viking top back on in 15 minutes easy. Taking the whole thing off takes about 5 minutes.

wasurfer86 01-06-2010 05:37 PM

thanks for the link

InfernoGirl 01-06-2010 08:15 PM

wow! After a couple of beers that looks pretty complicated! Thanks for the link, I'll re-read the directions tomorrow and see if they seem less involved.... ;)

Good points. I don't think I'd sacrifice the convenience just for the way it looks, not when it comes to my top anyway.
I'd just get the hardware and regular top.

Go over to jeepforum.com. There is a ton of info on the Viking and a number of massive threads. Note the info I posted above. It has been confirmed that Viking sold license to Rampage to prodice a copy of the Viking top. It is being made overseas but it is lower in price than the original Viking.
