wrangler grill conversion; YJ's square lights to round lights
Well here is a light conversion my buddy and I just got done doing on his jeep. It is a 1987 wrangler that has been modified for the better through the years. We grafted a cj grill and a yj grill together to make a bolt in grill. There are no changes that need to be made to the fenders of hood to make this work. This grill is different from the omx-ida grill in that the headlight buckets protrude into the grill slats like a cj does and also has round turn signals. Let me know what you think. If there is enough interest we are toying with the idea of making some. Thanks for looking

Nice work BUT i like Square that's why i have a YJ

bugman1964 01-20-2010 04:30 AM

I like it even though it does away with the squares. But some thing like this may just make my wife let me get a yj.

Headhauntcho 01-20-2010 06:14 AM

Great work!! What would be the price point you guys would be looking at? A conversion is a great idea- but not if it is extremely costly..

There are no fabrication pctures detailing how you changed the face. Did you just drill out spot welds from a cj and adopt it to a yj frame ? I would be interested in the step by step procedure.
I like the nomad in progress. Everyone needs a wagon. No profile info... where are you located ? thanks for the info. jr

Looks good except it looks like a TJ:)

lavern23 01-20-2010 12:20 PM

Thanks for the positive comments. I can't show the pictures of the process but can say that 2 grills were used to make one. You can't simply overlay one onto another because of size differences. As for looking like a tj? A tj's headlight bucket does not protrude into the grill slats like this one or a cj's does.
We haven't figured out price yet. Demand will determine that.

I will put in a profile soon. We are in Kentucky.

i like it, though it does look a bit odd because of the squared off hood with no square lights... but i definately commend you on your work looks flawless in the pictures.

i like how the cj lights go into the bar slats, i have thought about doing the cj hood and grill conversion but the lights have grown on me, ateast with this conversion you still retain all the stock fenders and hood stuff.

my plans will eventually be cj hood/grill and tube fenders.

good luck though! a good nitch not many people have filled and looks like you guys are professional quality.

btw to keep cost down you might try a trade and swap kind of production where someone sends you there grill and you provide the cj inserts and fab work. (that is instead of providing the whole shebang and they are left with two grills in the end)

Your work is very nice. Great job! I don't think I part with my square lights.

I want to clear something up about my intentions for this thread. I am posting these pics to share what my buddy and I did to his jeep and to see if anyone else like it as much as we do. I am not taking orders for these at this point just wanting comments. If we get to the production point I will respectfully go through the proper listing channels. I am writing this due to a thread on another site that was blocked b/c we must have came across like a seller rather than 2 guys showing a cool custom grill we thought others would like to see. Thanks and keep the comments coming.

yjkid95 01-21-2010 12:37 AM

I like it, to be honest ive been wanting to do this to my yj ever since i bought it i just dont have the skills or tools to do what you guys did

former USMC 01-22-2010 08:54 AM

When I run across a late model grill and compare the two I will let the forum in on the " secret " formula to transpose them. Personally if I wanted round lights I would have bought a newer style. Thanks for the pictures.

I love this grill, please send order info to if you decide to market these, I will buy one for sure. Thanks.

89YJislander 04-30-2010 09:52 PM

yj poser! jk... not really lol

1kooljeep 05-01-2010 10:02 AM

I always liked the older round head lights. The newer ones just don't look as good to me.
And you guys did a great job, gives it a euro kind of look.

Jeep grill
Please understand, I have had several Jeeps over the years, MB, cj5, 2 cj7's, scrambler, cj3a, 2 Wranglers. The most important thing after all these years is that the headlights turn on. I've owned my current YJ for over 11 years, and although I don't mind the "rectangular", not square headlights, I'm trying to keep my interest in this particular Jeep because it's in solid condition. I thought changing up a couple of things would give it a different look and re-spark my interest in the Jeep. Otherwise I might as well sell it and find something else.:bottom::bottom:

lavern23 05-05-2010 01:08 PM

Thanks for all the comments, both the good and the bad. We have had fun with this. It has been interesting to see peoples reaction when they look at the Jeep and notice that it is a bit different but not exactly how. Especially the people that know Jeeps and what the different years should look like. This topic of which is best will go on til the end of the world. I used to hear it all the time when I worked at a Jeep dealer in the accessories store. It was never ending.

We have made a few of these for those who are interested. If you are interested send me a pm or email to

I like it very much and from the photos you have done an excellent job of blending the two styles.

The one and only thing I see that I might like to be different if it were my personal vehicle is the headlight rings would be black instead of the body color. It would accentuate the headlights just a wee bit, give them a little depth.

Don't give all of your secrets away. If you do, you'll be giving away your marketability.

Overtrained 05-05-2010 01:43 PM

I like that, nice work:punk:

Kohrs93 05-05-2010 05:08 PM

wranglerYJnewb 05-06-2010 01:29 AM

i love my yj but that is bas a$$ and I want one :P go ahead and flame me

CMEvans79 05-06-2010 02:15 AM

I love it ... the only reason I never wanted a YJ is because of the square head lights.
