homemade roof rack

5 Attachment(s)
Here's the roof rack I made. Don't be too tough on me, some things I would have done different if I was going to do it again. I haven't made the basket yet or the attachments to hold my canoe (still trying to figure out how I'm going to do that). I can remove the rack by 4 clevis pins. I haven't hooked up the lights yet either. The last picture is my Jeep when I bought it about 6months ago.

That looks nice. It is 1" sq. tubing?

For the canoe, just rope down from the back to the back bumper, attach the other end to the winch, and tighten!!!

Great work. Now quit browsing and finish the job, don't forget the pictures. :D Laters,

kilgoretrout844 01-22-2010 06:54 PM

congrats man, good job! from a fellow canoer to another

wasurfer86 01-22-2010 06:55 PM

i think it looks pretty damn good. now if only i had the tools to pull that off id be set

Gonda 01-22-2010 08:12 PM

I wish I had that kind of talent! Nice work!

schnutzy 01-22-2010 08:17 PM

what did you use to attach the basket to the windshield frame?

noljohn 01-23-2010 04:34 PM

It is 1" sq tubing that I already had. I attached the front by making a right angle bracket that attaches to the hinge plate for the windshield on the bottom. On the top front the 1" tubing fits inside a sleeve and is secured with a clevis pin.

looks great. I myself am in the search for a rack. I have a tandem kayak i need to get up there. wish you lived in my area. I would see if you wanted a job building a second one.

TJRP 01-23-2010 11:20 PM

I worked at a canoe store all through college and we used tie down straps and these: 579XT Canoe Carrier - Thule - Thule Ski & Water Sport Carriers - Kayak Carrier, Canoe Rack, Ski Rack & Board Carrier , but If I were you I would go to academy and look for cheap gunwale brackets or Home Depot and look for ladder carrier brackets. I would get tie down straps from a canoe store. We sold a set for 15 dollars at the shop I worked at. Then we tied a rope from the bow and stern. Good Luck.

Can you write the directions on how you did this and the materials because i want to do this it looks legit

meyers 01-23-2010 11:51 PM

Looks good, I have toyed with the idea of building my own, but never seem to have the time to do it. How long did it take you?

noljohn 01-24-2010 03:53 PM

I have about 40 hours in it, mostly cleaning up the metal I used. It was all used metal welded together. Had to cut apart sand and paint, but it was all free. Jeeperzcreeper if you are interested I can send more pictures to your email but I never did write anything down. If you have the tools required and the metal its worth it. If you have to buy anything its cheaper almost to buy a new one. I used a Mig welder, gas torch set, 4 1/2 grinder, metal cut off saw, sawsall, and misc hand tools. I just like making my own stuff.

How about sharing your thoughts on this as well? Otherwise it does look nice. I have a Warrior Product roof rack I removed from my Jeep when I got it - didn't like the look.

jeeplover38 01-24-2010 11:37 PM

looks great, you could even put your spare up there

terrible2 01-24-2010 11:39 PM

you could and possibly roll over real easily

Clay125 01-25-2010 07:55 PM

Nice

CenARJeepChick 01-25-2010 08:46 PM

Very nice. Could you post some close up pics of the front and rear connection points? Thanks.

noljohn 01-25-2010 08:58 PM

Some of the things I would have done different is I would have put hinges on the back braces to make it easier to remove, I would have followed the contour of the roof more closely to cut down on wind noise, I would have made it disconnect in the front so when I took the rack off it still would have the light bar on to name a few. I'm out of town all this week so I'll try and post some close-ups Sat. of the connections.

GatorInNola 08-12-2010 10:43 PM

looks awesome. Any update on the canoe hookup?

SurfKaster 08-12-2010 11:03 PM

Looks damn skippy to me. I'd love to have it.

Artlugo 08-12-2010 11:28 PM

Looks good I think I want to make one now.

JeepDiver 08-13-2010 02:33 AM

Your Jeep looks great man, I'd love a roof rack but not sure how much I'd use it. I have those same black tubular bumpers and was thinking about buying and installing a winch but its not quite a recovery bumper; how do you like yours?

YJjeep 10-28-2010 05:50 AM

Nice job man. Id pay you to make me one :P

Peepers 10-28-2010 06:14 AM

Just a suggestion for hooking up the lights, use a 4 pin trailer harness, one wire for each light, and ground then to the rack. Then when you take the rack off you can diconnect and reconnect the lights real easy.

I have just a light bar over the windshield, and I ran the power wires down the inside of the tubing, and then flattend the wires ran them behind the antena and into the engine bay at the back of the hood.

ellman605 10-28-2010 09:18 AM

Did you weld or use brackets for everything? I would like to build a roof rack but don't have welding tools :(

JeepLove 02-23-2011 08:39 AM

Oooo can you make one for me? I need one really badly. I don't know how you would ship that thing... but its awesome.

Also - where did you get your black front & rear bumpers? I've been looking everywhere for that style! They would look perfect on my silver '06 x.
