Front Axle help for a new guy
I have a 2000 TJ that is my daily driver. It's my first Jeep and I am still learning the ropes. I recently went to change my front diff fluid when I found out that the ring and pinion is chipped up and my spider gears were destroyed. (All the teeth stripped off, almost smooth). I am fairly competent with a wrench, but I wouldn't even know where to start in terms taking the axle apart and replacing the gears. I would like to do the work myself if possible, but I'm not sure exactly which way to go.
-Get replacement gears and try to install myself
-Pick up a complete front axle assembly (What else would bolt on besides a Dana 30 out of a TJ??)
-Since I will be doing work, just upgrade to a selectable locker
Like I said, right now it is my daily driver, but I would like to start making it capable of some moderate trails.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
I'd suggest taking a step back and look at the bigger picture.
What size tires do you currently have, and what size would do you think you'd buy when those wear out?
What size axle is in there now? Dana30 or 44?
Since you're going to be putting new gears in, do you think now is the time to re-gear to an optimal ratio?
Do you have any parts right now that you plan to re-use? (spare locker, gears, etc?)
Taking all of that into consideration may save you time and money in the long run. Otherwise, if you want to just replace the gears with the same that's in there, it's not too hard of a job for someone who's comfortable doing it. I am not that person but a case of beer for a friend who is and maybe gas money to come visit gets the job done! :)
Replacing the ring & pinion gears is not an easy job, it requires special knowledge to set them up properly. I'd take it to a 4x4 shop that does R&P gear replacements and let them take care of it. I do all my own work on my TJ but I wouldn't tackle replacing a R&P gearset. :)
