New to the YJ world... Questions
Hello, just bought an 88 YJ the other day... My first jeep, however I don't like the skinny yj roll/sport bar.. I want a newer than 95 one.... Any info on where I could dig one up reasonably?
I have the hard top,
hard full doors
soft full doors,
soft half doors
would I need to replace ALL those, (aside from the half doors of course)
or would I be able to use any of it after the swap?
Any info would be greatly appreciated by this new jeeper.. Thanks in advance!
All would still fit
I would trade you if its green and were
Deck cover might not
wind hammer same
You could just put a pad on it
The 91-95 family/roll bar has the rear tubes that have the right angled bends making them vertical at the rear attachment points.
These were the same diameter tubing, that were offered with padding that made them appear thicker.
Both styles were as far as I know, interchangeable.
When re-installing a roll bar, it sometimes needs to be pried into place.
Anything newer than a 1995 is not a YJ. :wavey:
Just repeating what Buckshot said, but more emphatically: a newer than 95 roll bar would be off a TJ, and would most likely be way more trouble than it's worth. I would think it would impact the soft top, the windjammer, the bikini, and the duster. Maybe the hardtop, not sure. Probably the upper doors. And that's just if you get the bars to fit somehow.
I'd look into roll bar pads and aftermarket roll cages (which still might impact your tops, but would at least be bolt-in).
An easier option would be to let that old-skool style grow on you. Just picture Daisy Duke riding to the rescue in her white CJ.
all else fails build ur own
ok...so i just got a couple local offers to buy the bars off of either of a pair off 98 TJs......i read somewhere that it takes a little " persuading" to get to fit...im hoping that just means , some hardore pushing or pulling...(prying) into position til i can bolt em in? anyone done this before......
its only 80 bux, but i dont need an extra set of tj bars layin round if i cant get them to work..lol
shoot me a private message from wisconsin to let me know where ya are..we can see how far the trip would be for a swap..my bars are red now, but i work at a body shop..so i can make em whatever color ya want.
lol i got sidetracked thinkin bout daisy duke.......thanks....what was i doing?
If you're going to try and make a TJ roll bar fit into a YJ then you're going to need a bit more than just "prying" all the bolt holes are different, so you'd have to measure and drill new holes in the bottom plates.
I tried to get a TJ family cage out of a junkyard and got home to see that sadly it wasn't anywhere close, but I got it for $50 and sold it for $75 so it wasn't all that bad :D
new holes needed in the plates attached to the bars? or the Tub? shouldnt be to hard to measure and drill some holes as long as shape is the same ?? or do you think it would be too much of a hassle.....you said you sold them...was it to daunting, or just didnt want to go through the hassle of measuring and drilling? appreciate your input brother.
Omg it was hard to find the bolt plates for the YJ, here it is, now let me find the TJ's so you can see how different they are
Here we go...kinda See down at the bottom left part of the cage? Its got 2 holes down and 2 towards the side of the body, where as the YJ cage has 2 bolts down and 2 towards the rear of the body, basicly you'd only be using 2 bolts to hold in the bars and that doesn't seem very safe (unless you un-welded the plate and welded another on)
Up on the YJ pic the pole would be welded in the center of those 4 bolts on the bottom part
Hey Birdhunter...what were those bars you were gonna trade me off of?...lol
