12k - 18k maintenance

Hey guys,

I was wondering what do you guys do to your jk's when you get to 12k miles on as far as maintenance. I've been changing the oil every 3k miles and rotating the tires including the spare. I have a manual tranny is there anything I should be doing as far as inspecting the tranny fluid? If so how do you even do that on a manaul. My last car was an automatic so there was a dipstick. I was reading the manual and it also talked about checking the axle fluid. How do you check the axle fluid? If it does need to be replaced how easy is it to do that? I'm more than willing to lkearn how to do these maintenance things myself rather than taking it to a dealer.

I was told by a few Jeepers in my club that around 15K miles that its a good idea to drain and change your differential fluids. After the first change at 15K you really dont have to do it again until waaay down the road (prolly around 100K is a good number to shoot for)

I have just under 15K miles on my Jeep. So sometime in the next coming weekends I'll be doing it myself. It's pretty easy to do, theres a plug on the top and on the bottom. Just drain and fill. Go go royal purple.

By differential fluid do you mean axle fluid or transfer case fluid? I'm confused.

He means the differential gear oil.

I change my oil every 6000 miles, gear oil in the differentials at every-other oil change, and transfer case fluid at 30,000 mile intervals.
Blinker fluid is optional.

Then don't come on here complaining when your blinkers seize up! You probably never check your muffler bearings either.

I use Amsoil blinker fluid and titanium muffler bearings; better than kryptonite.

I have an AT.
2 of my 3 previous trucks were manual though and just used hypoid gear oil at about 18,000 mile intervals.
Doesn't the manual say anything? I never paid attention since I didn't have one...

I looked through the project-jk website more and it explained the manual tranny fluid and transfer case fluid change more. It seems pretty easy.
