Is this a good deal?
I have checked out a '98 Wrangler Sahara a few times. It's in good working order, very nice condition. Everything seems okay and it also has a hard top. It has 93,000 miles. The guy was asking 7k for it but I talked him down to 6k. He seemed very inexperienced with Jeeps, so I'm not sure if he knew what the vehicle was actually worth. Should I jump on it?
I'd recommend running a Carfax report on it...see if it's been in any major accidents. Also if you know a mechanic or have a friend who's really good with vehicles, maybe take them with you to do a walk-around and see if they see any signs of neglect/abuse that you overlooked.
I can't advise you on the price...I'd say check NADA Guides value...and compare. If it's less and everything checks out...it's probably a pretty decent deal. Used car values are still high as well... I was talking to our GM at the dealership I work for and he said right now, you can take the book value and add $3,000 to it and that's bout what you're looking to pay for a used vehicle...they're all still recovering from the Cash for Clunkers stuff.
Has it been in the bottom of a lake recently? (sorry, different thread we've been enjoying).
Good condition 97 and 98's seem to be in the range of $4,500-10,000. Higher end of the scale usually means they've added some stuff and want their money back (hah!).
Lower end means higher miles, smaller engine.
A Sahara model with 97k? I'd say 6k is a good price.
Have fun with your new ride (this one or whatever you find), and send pictures!
