vintage pics of my past jeeps

I dug out some pics of my past jeeps and thought I would post a few. The first is a '75 CJ5, the second is an '81 Scrambler. Both were pretty much stock 258 sticks. I took the CJ down to Cabo in 1980 where all the pics were taken. I had a lot of fun in that jeep. A couple of the more memorable trips included Indians and a sheriff. One day I found a trail near Cabazon that headed up into the San Bernardino mountains and took it in about 10 miles. We stopped for a break near a stream, intending to head up the switchbacks into the forest. An old pickup appeared out of nowhere carrying about 5 stern-faced men in the back with shotguns. They informed us we were trespassing on the Morongo Indian reservation. We got the message we better get the %&#@ out of there, and quick. I crossed that trail off my list. Another time one bright morning near Beaumont I found a fire road with the gate unlocked and open. We took it up into the San Bernardino's into the snow. Had a blast. When I came back down around dusk I was greeted with the same gate, only this time it was closed and locked. I thought "no problem" and tried to go over a large berm which was obviously there to keep vehicles out. I got hopelessly high-centered. After about an hour of cussing and digging a guy driving a backhoe comes along the paved road just on the other side. Being a nice guy he hooks his bucket onto the front bumper and, along with a loud SNAP, pulls the jeep to freedom. The loud snap was a board I was using to try and free the jeep snapping my brake line. Apparently some snoopy neighbor (there were rural houses here and there) saw the ordeal and called Riverside County's finest. Along comes sheriff Brown who calls in a warrant check on my friend and I. Being the irresponsible young adults we were at the time of course we both DID have warrants for unpaid traffic fines. Sheriff Brown let me limp the jeep to the nearest gas station before taking us to the Beaumont city jail. My friend's parents came and bailed us out around midnight . I went back the next day with a new brake line and got my jeep. I also have a Tijuana jail story but I wont go there right now. After I fixed the jeep I went back to the scene of the crime and saw a small bypass road I could have used instead of the berm. Talk about insult to injury. The Scrambler pics were taken in Orange County and Puerto Penasco, Mex. I used to do a lot of wheeling in O.C. in the Mission Viejo and Laguna Hills area. All those trails are now cookie-cutter housing tracts or multi-million dollar homes. Like long-lost girlfriends, sometimes I wonder what happened to those jeeps.
