jw i want to put a locker in can i? and what should i get for cheap

Go look at your axle if it has a flat rubber plug it's a dana35 if it has a metal hex shaped plug it's a dana44

I never used lockers I don't know which ones are good and which aren't, I have seen and heard of alot of people using detroit lockers though

First go look at your rear axle & tell us if you have a Dana 35 or a Dana 44. We can't make any locker recommendations until we know that.

The first pic below is a Dana 35c, the second is the stronger optional extra-cost Dana 44. :)

IF (!) your rear axle is a Dana 44, the least expensive locker I can recommend is the No-Slip from Powertrax. That's an automatic "lunchbox" locker that is easily installed without adjustments to the ring & pinion gears being needed. It's also the best behaved lunchbox locker by far, other lunchbox lockers include the Lockright, Aussie, & EZ-Locker but none of those are well behaved when installed into the rear axle (all are ok in the front).

The No-Slip is MUCH better behaved when in the rear, I personally would not install any of those other lockers into a rear axle. But if you have to drive on icy roads & highways much during the winter or drive on sloping icy or snow-covered trails, not even the No-Slip is a good choice.

There are better choices for the rear axle but all of those, like the Detroit Locker, ARB Air Locker, etc. cost significantly more.:)

I have the dana 44 rear with drum brakes. I was told they only came with disc brakes, is this true? Sorry not trying to hijack thread, just wanted to ask a quick question.

Dana 44 axles came with drum brakes in early TJs. :)

You could lock the front D30 with a lunchbox for $200 - $250.

what would be the pros and cons of locking the front with a lunch box? and i do live in buffalo ny so i drive in alot of ice and snow

If you need 4x4 to get around in Buffalo, you don't want an automatic locker up front at all. Steering would be dangerous, the locker would cause a lot of understeer whenever you were in 4x4.

When did they switch over to disk brakes? I've got a 44 in the rear and if I remember right, I've got rear drums. Mine's an 02

You're describing what is known as a "selectable" locker that can be locked & unlocked remotely by a push button or lever. Since you believe you have a Dana 44 rear axle, there are three selectable lockers that work well in the rear (or front) axle. In order of my (!) personal preference, my #1 choice would be an ARB Air Locker. It is controlled by a push button & operates off of a small ARB compressor. This is also the most expensive locker but it is a very good choice. Next down the price scale is an Eaton E-Locker which is also push-button controlled but is electric & only needs a simple on-off switch. The E-Locker is gaining a good repuation. Last of my favorites is the cable & lever actuated Ox-Locker.

Any of those can be left unlocked for street use which is best/safest for slick streets. For offroad times, push the button or pull the lever and your axle is locked for awesome offroad traction.

There is one more selectable locker called an ECTED but not many think it's worth installing & personally, I agree. Its issues center around that it is clutch-based which means it can slip on a tough obstacle (BAD!!!) and its clutch pack will eventually wear out. :)

According to my Jeep book, Saharas came standard with the D35c, but most I've ever seen had the optional D44. All of them came with the 4.0L

Mines an 02 TJ with 44's and drum brakes.
