New Member needs advice please
 
Hi - I have always loved the idea of owning a Wrangler and am now in a position to buy one - I have my eye on a 1998 Sahara to buy in the UK for 3000 - 110k miles - I wont use it much for offroad - just for fun.
Advice please

What problems can I expect for a wranger at that age/milage ?

Am I stuipid to use it more as a commuter vehicle rather than what is was designed for?

Does a soft top really provide winter cover - loads of win/rain?

What MPG can I expect (4 litre) ?

Hi Terry, Wranglers can be very dependable as a daily driver. I've had one as a daily driver continuously for 22 years and have only had one instance where I broke down and had to have it towed. Someone with your specific model can give you a better idea of what to look out for with your model year. I run a soft top on my 2009 year round and it is comfortable. You can expect around 13 -15 MPG from a stock vehicle but that varys depending on how you drive.

Wow, dude. The UK? Shipping's gonna' be 'xpensive.:rolleyes:

That works out to about $4100 US so the price ain't too bad depending what kinda' shape the vehicle is in. With that kinda' mileage/age you can expect all of the problems typical for a vehicle in the same age bracket, but it boils down to how it was maintained, handled, driven, miles on the highway/stop and go traffic, unusually dusty/polluted environments, did it sit around a lot (you'd be amazed how quick that'll screw up a vehicle), etc.

To determine it's future you have to know its past. How has it spent its life up until now? Other than that; if you want it you want it. Bite the damn bullet and go buy the thing and when (not if) it breaks learn to fix it. That's what I started doing years ago and a piece of "duh" popped outa' my mouth one day and has stuck with me since (speaking to a friend with a '72 Impala for a daily driver): "Dude, if you want to drive a car like this, you either gotta' learn how to fix it yourself or be able to afford to pay someone else to fix it."
