Jeep RFID Key problem

Doh! :banghead:

My jeep only came with one key. I made copies and sure enough it is grey thus it means it is a transponder/rfid/expensive key.

I lost the only key I had and now do not have anything. I know I can tow my jeep to the dealership but I live like 60 miles away and I am cheap.

Is there a way to bypass the system so I can use a normal key?

What are my options other then flip my house over once more and then hop in a truck and drive to the county dump?

What did ya do to the one key you had? I do not believe there is anyway around that. Its a security feature that is in the comp.brain. It needs the signal to start. I brought mine to a dealer and paid $80 to have a second made. Once you have two-you can make your own, follow the manuel. Hope all works out well.

Just wanted to give an update.

I talked to the dealer and they said I had to get the jeep towed to them. An hour away. Not going to happen. I found a locksmith in town who can encode the key but I need to call the dealership and get my pin code/skim code or something like that. Do you think they will just give it to me?

Another q. Is one of these keys better quality then the other?

692958 - Jeep® Rock Key in Charcoal for Transponder Ignition - Quadratec
MOPAR 5018869AA - Ignition Key with Transponder for 98-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec
or is one just MOPAR stamped?

Good question, I'd like to know to. Had a dealer want to charge $60 for a blank and $70 to code it, little pricey, that is until you lose the only key you have thanks for the reminder.

Depends on how nice the dealer is, most wont give something like that out without being able to confirm that it is your Jeep., If you need help send me a PM I can look it up as well and let you know what it is. I need to see what info I would need from you though, VIN and I think something else not sure though.....I'll check

Our dealership would need to have the vin and the title most likely...maybe even the license registration and possibly proof of insurance (unlikely, but who knows).

If you can't get it figured out, let me know and I can ask one of the service guys next time I'm at the dealership...I work for the owner so I'm out that way 3 days a week or so.

Just called the local dealer, this one will code a key for $43 and $60 for a key, asked if I could bring in a blank key, they said sure, but if the code doesnt take its still $43. So basically if it didnt take the code you'd have a cut key from some where that wont take a cut key back. So, would it work if I had a key from walley world cut and the dealer program my uncut transponder key, hold the keys close togther and try to start the jeep with the walley world key. If it starts, have the transponder key cut and done deal. If not I can send the uncut transponder key back. Confreakinfusing.:

Yeah I looked and all that is truely need is the VIN to get the PIN, but dealers ask for other stuff just to make sure you arent stealing the vehicle. I can look it up though and get it for you if needed.

rooster,

dont be like me and lose your last one! They are probably wanted more business and want to sell you the key. I think the mopar one on quadratec is the exact same so I would think that it would program just fine. Now the rock one, I don't know, I would think so but am not all that confident with it being 1/2 the price.

Hardermods:
PM sent!

rooster 03-12-2010 11:33 AM

Well, I just ordered two of the rock jobbies. The dealers said programming 2 keys same price as one, figured what the hell. When I get the blanks and get them coded I'll post a review. Ha, could be my 1st review.
They say you need 2 coded keys to code one on your own, we'll see.

So...........no way to bypass? I am a little RFID paranoid lol

Problem Solved!

I bought 3x rfid keys from ebay, about $60
Got SKIM code via VIN. :)
Talked to local locksmith and he didnt think he could do it, but he could! That costed $50.

Beats towing this to a dealership and paying big bucks. The funny part was driving it to the locksmith. He lives about 2 mile away. Fortunately it was downhill. I probably started it a dozen times and coasted there.

Hooray, the jeep is back! (Now watch me find the key I lost tomorrow)
