Clunking Sound from Rear w/ Video
I was off-roading today down in the Pine Barrens and everything was all good till I went to leave and there was a clunk coming from my rear passenger side tire.

I haven't had a chance to pull the tire and check suspension, but I wanted to see if you guys have any first suggestions or where to check. Thanks.

It may still be a few more minutes for the video to upload. The camera mic really makes the sound a lot louder then it is, but when going over bumps, the clunk is definitely audible.

The video sayd "An error has occurred, please try again later." so I couldn't see or hear it.

But, if you have a Dana 35c as your rear axle, a soft clunk as the axle shaft moves slightly in/out against the c-clip is absolutely 100% normal. With a c-clip axle design as your rear Dana 35c axle has, the axle shaft has to be able to move in & out enough so the c-clip can be removed from inside the axle housing when you need to work on things. :)

It is a D35 on the rear axle, however, it's something just noticeable right as we were leaving, not while were out riding or any other time. It's actually something fairly loud and not something I had heard before from the axle such as just the C-clip moving.

Also, I should say it is only noticeable when putting pressure on the passenger side, not the driver side. It's definitely coming from the rear passenger wheel.

Sounds like a broken shock. Basically like you put a hole in it. You can also here like a air pump when you move it up and down. So jump under it and look at the shock tube and see if there is anything broken cracked.

I think you might be right! I haven't taken the wheel off to look at the shock but I bet that's what going on right now is the shock is broken :rolleyes: How difficult is a replacement? I've gotta go back to school tomorrow night so I'll have about 4 hours tomorrow to get this done. I have a hydo-lift and somewhat a tolerance for learning how to do basic maintenance so I'd probably just tackle a replacement myself.

Depending if you have the shock for your lift. I dunno 10-20 mins depending on how crafty you are with a socket and wrench. Then jut don't break the bolts in the body :). Nice and gentle with those.

Okay, so I took a picture of my rear suspension (shock and spring) and just want to know where should I start looking. I looked at the shock and there doesn't appear to be any cracks. The air pump sound I believe is that red air lift kit located inside of the coil spring. It came with the Wrangler so I don't know if I should just remove it or leave it. I couldn't tell you what purpose it serves.

well that air bag is normally used on trucks to level out the ride while towing, transfers weight back to the front tires when towing a heavy/heavier load. Maybe the PO towed with it. Leave them in I say can you adjust them as in did the PO leave the control in the truck?? If so sweet :). I am going to listen to it again and see if I can hear more what the sound is.

ok so do you know if it makes that clunk sound on the way down or up? Your just bouncing it hard to tell but jump underneath and check bolts even tho it really sounds like it is still in the shock or spring. Deals with the up and down motion of it all.

I'm almost certain it's on the way back up just by judging the video. Unfortunately, no the PO didn't keep the controls with it :/ I wouldn't know what they look like, but pricing them out they're about a $100 for the set!

Alright, so I got some replacement shocks (Monroes which should last until I get my lift kit in the summer), and I can't get the damn bolts undone. I'm guessing the bottom is a 5/8" with a 3/4" nut and the top is a 1/2" but I've used WD-40 (no PB) and let it sit, and all I'm doing is stripping the bolt which isn't good.

Any suggestions or methods to get said bolts off?
