1981 Jeep Scrambler, wont start when hot outside.
 
I am wondering if anyone has any input on this. My girlfriend has a 1981 Jeep Scrambler parked outside. I feel like any time we drive it anywhere, we have it towed into the shop then walk home. Despite this, she won't part with it. At this point she has poured thousands of dollars into fixing things part by part. I wish she had just done large projects rather than fixing one thing at a time as it broke, but now it feels like a monstrous Frankenstein.

At this point, just about the only thing she hasn't replaced is the electrical system, and it's in bad shape. Wires are hanging down from the dash, and she feels like the electrical system is whats causing the Jeep to refuse to start when them temp outside is over 100 degrees F. Any suggestions before I put another 1,500 bucks into redoing the wiring?

The ignition control module (inside the distributor cap) can and do often cause ignition systems to fail when they get hot, but usually only after the engine has been running for some time. I'd also check the ignition coil to see if it is damaged at all.

Few questions:
1. Does it turn over?
2. Is this problem from a cold start or after its been running and a restart is done or both?
3. Which engine?
4. If he rewire does not fix it, what is your next plan?

Dump the Ford Ignition, swap this in your ignition is 29 years old.
