Check Engine Light?

As I was coming out of second gear my engine burped (hesitated) and the 'check engine' light came on. It still idles perfectly and runs great. Could it be an O2 sensor? Hope it's not too serious. What does it sound like to you? Anyone else had/have this problem? Any info would be appreciated!

Have a local autoparts store pull the codes

You can get the code yourself. Turn the key off-on-off-on-off-on and the code will be in the odometer window.

Seriously? I hope that's a joke!

that's not a joke, the code will pop up in the Odometer if you turn the key on off 3 times and leave it in the on position on the 3rd time.

I concur. I've done it on my '03 TJ.

No joke as indicated. Jeep as well as other Chryslers will self display. I have a 99 Durango which will display.

I'll have to try that out when it appears again. However, as of yesterday the "CE" light was no longer there so I guess the puter corrected the issue. Thanks for the advice!

If there are no codes present it will read P DONE

You probably just had crap pass through the fuel system. That happened to me doing 75mph on the highway same thing.

I've had my CEL come on while doing nothing more than extended offroading in 4Lo where I guess the computer is simply thinking 'this long period of high rpms at low speeds ain't right'. The CEL can come on once in while without anything being seriously wrong but so long as it's not something serious, it will usually clear itself before too long. And it's generally always smog-system related which is seldom serious if ever. It's the "Check Gauges" light that always gets my attention which indicates low oil pressure, high engine temps, etc. :)

My 01 will show the codes also.

Jerry Bransford 03-17-2010 01:45 PM

'98 and '99 are the two years I am aware of that definitely will not show the codes via the ignition key technique. Both of those model years require an aftermarket code reader. I can't remember if that ability was restored by 2000 or not.
