What kind of soft top do I need? Help please :)

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and very new to Jeeps.

I was really lucky and my Uncle moved away overseas and did not need his 2001 TJ Wrangler anymore so he gave it to me.

I've only been driving it for about 4 months.

Currently I have a hard top on it and I wanted to get a soft top so I could take of the top more easily in the summer, but I'm not sure what kind of soft top I need to get.

From what I understand, because I only have a hard top with no "soft top hardware" I need to get the full thing, not just a "replacement top".

Unfortunately, the cheapest one I could find was about $500, which my budget is not liking.

Is this really the cheapest I can get because I have not soft top hardware? I did find this:
1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler Soft Top Hardware Kit - Body Mechanical & Trim - Bestop 97-06 Wrangler Soft Top Hardware Kit - PartsGeek

Would I be able to use that hardware and then just buy a replacement top, which would be considerably cheaper?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Look for a used factory top and hardware. Lots of folks change out their stuff and sell the old. That way you'll have the hardware you need and if needed later can buy a new replace a top. Bestop makes the oem tops and their quality is excellent. You also have the option of a bowless top, but there is still minimal hardware required for them. Look at the Rampage bowless fastback tops for a well priced version of a great top... Search for sale ads here and other forums, ebay and craigslist and you will likely find something in your budget if you look for a used factory top.

There are "budget" tops, like Pavement Ends (Bestop's budget brand). But even those are going to stretch your budget.

Look at it this way: It's hard to buy a coat for less than $100 anymore. And a soft top has all sorts of metal hardware, Velcro, vinyl windows, zippers, and yards of fabric. These are complicated objects.

If you find a used one, PLEASE post something here before you buy it, and ask the experts at this site if the top sounds like a good deal, and if it has all the hardware you need. I don't want you to buy something, and then discover it doesn't work.

Good hunting!

And congrats on youur new Jeep.

Soft top!

Hi everybody,
I just bought my first jeep. It is a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I'm completely in love with it. I'm trying to find the best top to buy. I found a besttop soft top that unzips which is exactly what I want, but it said there was no "hardware" included in the kit. I'm not sure what hardware it is talking about... anybody know??
