Cracked exhaust manifold?

trying to figure out what this new sound is coming out of my jeep. its like a loud ticking noise and is more pronounced when she is cold. i have a video of it, and i apologize for the first rev i do, my camera's mic is sensitive and had it to close to the fan.

YouTube - possible cracked manifold jeep wrangler

i looked around at the normal spots that it would crack at and did not see anything, but then again there is a intake in the way.

If it turns out that it is cracked, it just goes to prove my theory that jeeps has a mind of there own and have feelings. the day before this started i helped a friend install and full exhaust system into his GMC jimmy.

thanks for the help!

Not to highjack, but I've also wondered if it's bad for the jeep to drive with a cracked manifold since it's a common problem?

Its not bad for it from what i heard... It just wont pass an emissions test if your required to have one. I had a grand cherokee with a cracked exhaust manifold which seems to be very common with jeeps and it ran fine, just had that weird sound when i was at idle.

Call around to your local garages. Ask if they have a SMOG testers. Its a pump that pushes smoke through your system and if theres a crack or leak youll see it.

Im calling a bad gasket on that one. Had the same thing happen with my dodge and jeep

What did that "weird sound" tend to sound like? Asking cuz I have a very faint, fast paced ticking sound coming from around the top of my engine thats been doing it for a while. The ticking sound changes with throttle activity...was wondering if it could be fuel injectors and if not, then what

McLovin 04-05-2010 08:09 PM

Its described as a ticking sounds and also can be described as a tapping sound. Kind of when you get a stuck valve!

chrisb0108 04-05-2010 08:11 PM

So what you're saying, McLovin, is that I could "possibly" also have a cracked exhaust manifold?

McLovin 04-05-2010 08:14 PM

Like stated before, bad gasket. Your exhust manifold and exhost header pipe is all one gasket. Atleast it is on a 2.5. I had a bad gasket and at and idle or rev it would flap and hit aginst the block making the taping sound.

Call around to your local goarages and ask to see if they have a SMOG tester. It will show you if you have a bad gasket or a cracked exhaust manifold

chrisb0108 04-05-2010 08:18 PM

Sorry, you did say gasket in your previous post. I'm "working" and on here scanning for useful info and missed that part where you mentioned the gasket. Thank you sir for your feedback! :)

McLovin 04-05-2010 08:20 PM

For another tip to save yourself money, time, and anger call thoes garages for that SMOG test. Its a little canister they put compressed air into, it pushes a colored smoke through your system and where ever it pops up through is where your leak is! Alot cheap to do it this way and replace one part instead of 5!

And anytime, glad to help :wavey:

my engine just sounded louder (not in a good way) and it had that ticking sound that you are describing. it sounds like it is a cracked exhaust manifold though

RhcSavage21 04-05-2010 08:23 PM

I'll get another video of it when its cold its a lot more distinct. any other place besides the collector that it cracks at? i know when i did run seafoam threw it i had smoke coming out of the engine compartment.

jamesdeanblvd 04-05-2010 08:44 PM

My 97 Sport does the same thing. Drives me crazy when I'm driving down the road with my drivers side window down. When you figure it out, let us know.

RhcSavage21 04-07-2010 07:23 PM

OK i ordered a replacement header if there is a crack or if the gasket is going, also adding a magnaflow high flow cat as well in case that seal was dead too. its gonna be a few weeks before i can get it installed since my header is on back order. I'll let you all know if that was the issue.

Wait!!! Check one thing first.
Check this piece here. It makes a loud clicking noise sometimes and other times its un noticable. I found it with the old mechanics trick of holding a rod up to my ear and tracking down the sound.

Also, these manifolds are steel and can be welded to be even stronger than a replacement. See if there is a custom exhaust or metal shop in your area that would weld it for you. I found a custom exhaust shop that did all the work to remove the manifold, repair it and reinstall for about $200. At that price, there was no way I was going to bother doing it myself (:

This works.

RhcSavage21 04-07-2010 07:55 PM

i can weld the manifold myself, either way i am pulling it out to do the work so why not replace it with some headers to improve the sound. but what am i suppose to check?

relay 04-07-2010 08:13 PM

Click on the link in the 2nd post. It does work and it is a pic of the component to check.

RhcSavage21 04-07-2010 08:24 PM

i see no link.

RhcSavage21 04-07-2010 08:51 PM

Well if I could type it should have said.. if you do have a crack in the exhaust manifold and you decide to replace it, get one with the expansion joints/sections in, other wise it may crack again..

I've got a loud clicking sound that randomly occurs on my Jeep...might just be an exhaust leak, but it's so random, I'm leaning toward something else. It's just enough to bother me too. lol

sorry i was talking about the picture relay posted. and the header i ordered is not the one with the expansion joints. but if it does cracked i'll be ready with the old one repaired.

Those of you on here that are not opposed to Seafoam, run some through your brake booster vacuum hose and see if any smoke comes out from around your exhaust header. Pretty sure that will tell you if you have any leaks.

wrpracing13 04-08-2010 02:58 PM

hey i got the same ticking problem on my jeep, usually only when its cold. the guys at this race shop by my house said it was a gasket leak. does anyone know if that will throw up some engine codes, because my check engine has been popping on and off for a while and i think its something to do with the 02 sensors
