The wave is dead!

As a first time Wrangler owner, I joined the forum, did my research and decided that I would participate in the "Jeep wave." After all, I wanted to do my part, be friendly, support the community, and didn't want to be one of the one's responsible for the death of "the wave."

And so, over the last month, I have been giving the "wave" to dozens and dozens of wrangler owners. I've waved to old men, young men, women, couples.........new wranglers, old wranglers, shiny wranglers, wranglers that looked like they belonged in a junk yard......

And you know what? Out of about 100 waves I given....I received one wave back. Most people just look at me like I'm completely insane.

I have come to the conclusion that, at least in Rhode Island, last rights have been given. The wave is dead.

That's too bad. Here the rarity is to have somebody not wave back. We usually smile and wave pretty much at the same time. Just remember, you're waving at the Jeep anyway lol!

Jp90Talon 04-05-2010 09:35 PM

I should be heading to RI sometime this week......If you see a black wrangler with an obnoxious front bumper wave. I will def wave back!

USAntigoon 04-05-2010 09:40 PM

The wave is not death.. In my opinion more of the newbie Jeepers need to be educated.. I keep on giving the wave and have seen some "non wavers" all of a sudden waving back..
Granted, it can be frustrating.. especially in the metropolitan areas..
But once I drive "UP North" in Michigan the wave return is almost a 100% deal..
Just keep it up..(The sun always shines behind the clouds..)

DakotaBuck 04-05-2010 10:04 PM

redsoxx1918 - I had the same experience up here in Boston this weekend. I probably got 2 solid waves and 1 peace sign. I'll keep waving - you do the same

Dewayne 04-05-2010 10:08 PM

We wave at Jeeps regularly here about 70% wave back but we still keep waving .Dont give it up just yet .Some of the locals (the ones we meet often) have got the hint and have began waving :wavey: .We just picked up a 2000 TJ for my wife, she is still new so sometimes she forgets to wave. But my daughter (1999 TJ) or myself (2008 JK 4 dr) are quick to remind her to WAVE .So the wave is not dead I think some people just dont even think about it .

To the O.P. I found a solution. Check out one of my old threads.... http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/the...off-45351.html :firedevil:

It is hit and miss here in Raleigh, NC. Maybe 1 of 5 wave back. Now that the tops are down and the doors are off, people are starting to wave back more. Question though - do you wave at Jeeps passing on a divided highway? What about someone passing you, or you passing them on the highway? It seems that I only get waves back when I am on a 2 lane road...which isn't very prevalent here in the Triangle.

Samsrubicon 04-05-2010 10:45 PM

i get the wave back 90% of the time, no offense but the only ones i dont get the wave back from are women, and i notice that 100% of the time they are either on the phone or doing thier make-up/hair. so i dont get angry they are just tryin to be pretty for the world. i enjoy the wave and as some have said, you're waving at the jeep.

woodsballnc 04-05-2010 10:51 PM

Most jeepers that have jacked up rigs won't wave to us "smaller" jeeps most of the time. But when I wave at them they do however wave back. Keep waving though.

01bud 04-05-2010 10:52 PM

when i bought my jeep i didnt know why every jeep waved at me until my friend educated me about the jeep wave.now i wave all the time.:wavey:

Fweaky 04-05-2010 11:20 PM

Move to central Virginia. I get waves from about 70% of the jeeps I pass.

CMEvans79 04-05-2010 11:29 PM

Its not dead ... I actually got waves back from JK owners tonight for the first time! I was excited that JK's actually waved at a TJ!

Levinoss 04-05-2010 11:37 PM

More and more people who are getting into wranglers I think are not informed on the wave.

CMEvans79 04-06-2010 12:05 AM

I have only had my TJ since last Sept. and LOVE the Wave ... I wave at every Wrangler on the road!

Chuck210 04-06-2010 07:54 AM

one thing i have noticed is when the top is down and doors off the wave is in full force it seems.

Oh yeah, whole arm out the side huge wave :D

yj-genral 04-06-2010 08:42 AM

i think it should be in the owners manual, or atleast a small side note/informative clause by the dealership when they sell one... im just saying...

Hilldweller 04-06-2010 09:06 AM

I've noticed that RWR (reciprocal wave ratio) is dependent upon a few factors:
Day of the week --- Mondays have a lower percentage than Fridays; Saturday is peak RWR day.
Weather --- higher RWR on sunny days.
Holidays --- still higher RWR on holidays.
Degree of build --- if a cooler-built Jeep waves first, it's more likely that the other Jeeper will return the wave. It's a law, like gravity.
Economy --- when the Dow Jones is peppy, I get more return waves.
Hotness of driver --- cute drivers get more return waves. Duh.

So you're in Rhode Island. It's been raining alot there recently; strike 1.
It's Tuesday; strike 2.
New Jeep; need to build it.
Easter should've helped a bit...

:wavey:

Wally Meyers 04-06-2010 09:09 AM

I may be busy and not see you, but my Wrangler that named "Lucky Dog" waves back. On both rear side windows and the rear window I have a sticker of Snoopy (about 4x6) that's waving to everyone.:wavey:

captblack 04-06-2010 09:12 AM

Seems like I get more when the doors are off and the top is down. Most are from others in the same condition. Everyone smiles ...

Some waves from those with the top up seem to be tinged with regret that they do not have the air blowing around them as well ...

jcf 04-06-2010 09:20 AM

I got NO waves at Easter Jeep Safari & I waved at loads of Jeeps. Thats it I give up

With that many Jeeps around you could get a dummy hand and attach it to your A-pillar with a spring.
Perpetual-wave device.

Update on the south fla wave situation. After a bit over a month from the day I bought my jeep, I have waived to every jeep that has gone by with 1 positive response. Anybody on the ft lauderdale Miami area getting waives back? I'm still going to do it because when I owned my 350z I started a little wave trend down here. I'm not giving up!

Doc Harvey 04-06-2010 10:54 AM

The wave in the Minneapolis metro area is about 50-60%...

Bummer - most people with offroad jeeps understand - you must be waving to yuppy jeepers/mall crawlers - don't get me wrong I like all jeeps, but the soccer moms dont get involved in the "JEEP" life style. I wave at all jeeps also and only receive a few back - but those few I receive back is enough to justify that I keep the wave alive and strong!!!

PecosRiver 04-06-2010 11:15 AM

I live in the country and wave at everyone. Most respond.

guygettnby 04-06-2010 12:46 PM

here in maryland i would have to agree that the wave is pretty much dead or at least dying. it is too the point that when you wave at another jeep owner you get nasty looks back and i have even had 1 guy flip me the bird  i have had about 3 people wave back at me, possibly a few more out of the hundreds i have waved too. so unless somebody waves too me i dont wave any more. the number of wrangler owners i now see is crazy compared to a few years ago.

space-ghost 04-06-2010 12:58 PM

I get the wave back some of the time, I try to make eye contact to make sure there looking. The bad part comes when the ol' lady starts to tease becuase they didnt wave back...

I really think its because they are in shock; not many minorities out there driving a Wrangler...:D

Ok, dont start that there goes the neighborhood crap...:flipoff:
