spudder problem
After about 15 min of driving my jeep for a sec or 2 will sputter and stop pushing forward. My rpm's don't drop to 0 but it does act as off i let off the gas. Any ideas?

Its acting up bad? could it be the alternator or the belt? i tried starting her up after work and it was having trouble starting up. It was supper slow to even turn over.

Not quite enough info to go on bro, year? engine?

If it were a bad alternator or belt, it will most likely have a squealing noise. Could be a vacuum problem, or a choke problem if its carbureted. If its fuel injected I would try a TPS or a MAP sensor 1st.

Low power could cause the injectors to misbehave, Considering the hard start I would first take the battery out at an O'Reilly's and have them check it. You can get a basic idea about your alternator by disconnecting the positive terminal while the motor is running; if it dies, your alternator is not sending juice to the ignition system, and that's bad m-kay?

ok so i fixed the start up problem, my starter was bad and my battery was low. So i replaced them. But my jeep still is trying to sputter while driving it… Going to replace the belt tomorrow and try and find the problem.

IT happening in neutral as well… amy idea what i should look into? the spark plugs look good, just replaced the belt and battery as well…any ideas y'all?? i feel like I'm loosing a bit of power…

Fuel pump and/or filter? Sounds like she's starved for gas.

i did just replace the fuel pump and fuel filter, 7 months ago.

If when this happens the engine is still rotating from the wheels pushing it, and the tach goes to O rpms then it is a problem with the ignition system.
If not, and tach reads the same then it should be a fuel problem.

Does it sputter when you are turning the wheel by chance?

Try unplugging the O2 sensor(s) and driving it.

well I'm running with no 02 sensor right now, due to it being ripped out on a trail, she aint no mall crawler!! HAHA. And no its no specifically happening when I'm turning, its almost always after about 15 min after running. the RPMs are not dropping right to 0, as if the engine suddenly cut out. but more just loosing power to the wheels and then the fps just slow down. Maybe it is a fuel problem but how would i test that? turn on the jeep and test the fuel rail?

The fuel rail has a test port on it, but it requires a fuel pressure test gauge to get a good reading on it.

Injectors...I have never been able to test them, always just took it to a repair shop to have anything like that done. Or replaced if I felt they were the problem, But that's a pricey troubleshooting attempt.

You stated that the fuel filter was replaced 7 months might be needing a new one. Or maybe try taking it out and dumping it out to see if there is dirt in it.

Make sure your fuel tank is not creating a vacuum.

I just fixed the same issue. It would sputter when cold. While cold and idling, the RPMs would dip so low that the jeep would almost stall out, but then rev back up. I did a lot of research and decided that it would be either the O2 sensor or the temperature sensor (not gauge sending unit, but the sensor that tells the computer its cold).

I gambled and won. It was the O2 sensor. I swapped it out and the sputter went away.

My Jeep is a 93, 4.0 manual.

Def. sounds like O2 sensor. When an O2 sensor goes up you you will be driving with the pedal at held at a constant rate while feeling the engine restrict and then give power continuously. Luckily on YJ's the part is fairly cheap and easy to get to compared to O2 sensors on other cars.

well i have been driving without a 02 since may. But here is the problem, i have the new o2 sensor here, but i fred replacing it but i broke the head off the bolt on the pipe…

Then you have to drill it and get an easy-out to get it out of there. That always required me to take the pipe off to perform that task. Since you can't get the drill in there between the pipe and the frame. Its a job...and they make a O2 sensor tap to chase the threads...yeah the damn things have their own thread pattern. The job isn't any fun, that's for sure.

what if i just cut out that section of pipe and find a nut that fits, then from that point drill out a hole in the new pipe and weld in the nut that fits that thread of the 02 sensor? a little easier and i have the tools to do that.

Pull the plug and check the resistance. Don't recall the numbers specifically, but if you check them all, if one is way out of range, you'll know it.

ok so i think i got it to stop,for anyone who has a similar problem, i had to clean of the fps and the housing to it. so far so good.
