Odd Rubicon question?

Well I am shopping around for a Rubicon and have an odd question.

Which is better to go with, benefits/downsides of each, or does it really not matter all that much.

2003-2004 5spd or 2005-2006 6 spd

I appreciate any advice I can get!

Just isnt an option for me....I like the feeling of control and actually driving. I havent owned an auto since I was 16 and as long as I have 2 functinal arms and legs dont plan anything other than a manual.

All I can tell you is that I have an '03 5 speed Rubicon. I had a 99 Sport that I sold years ago and I LOVE this one even more that I loved my 99. Can't say that I have any experience with the 6 speed, but then again I have driven 5 speeds since I started driving 20 years ago. I think that 6 speeds would seem too weird (easy for me to say; right?).

6 speed has a narrower power band vs. a 5 speed. Therefor you spend more time at optimum power peaks due to the gear ratios being closer. Your gas mileage might be slightly better with a 6 too since you hit higher gears faster. You'll see a better acceleration with a 6 speed as well. This comes at a price however...

You shift more.

If given the choice, I would take a 6 speed. I've always favored them over 4 or 5 speed. But I really like automatics the best, especially offroad.

IMO in your case however, 6 speed FTW

The '03 '04 5 speed is the NV3550 which I've heard is very good . The '05 '06 6 speed is the NSG370 which they have been putting in the JK's and there have been quite a few complaints about it "popping out of gear". If you look in the JK forum they are trying to get a recall for that tranny. Maybe the Rubicon models have a different tranny(?). Just my 2 cents. I love the AX15 5 speed in my '99 which was the last year they used them.

By the way I totally agree with your statements about driving a stick. :)

I have an 06 Rubi with the 6 speed. I've got a couple of buddies that have Rubi's with the 5 speed and we've gone back and forth as to which is better. I'm very happy with the six and have had zero issues with it . . . it's much nicer with 33" tires . . . with the stock 31s, first gear was practically useless. From what I have heard the 6 speed is preferred for normal driving for some of the reasons mentioned earlier, but I've heard that the old 5 speed might be a bit stronger. Personally I don't think it really matters all that much and I'd be inclined to decide which to buy based on other factors like milage, price, overall condition of the Jeep, etc.

I got an 06 6spd and have heard they are suppose to be better than the 5spd like mentioned earlier but I myself never drove the 5spd. I will say though when I drive on the interstate back to visit in NE I have to stay in 5th just to stay in 75-80, actually I really never seem to get to use 6th that often anyways. Also supposedly if you every plan on getting a BL with the 6spd they do not work without alot of modification, it prevents you from shifting into R,2nd and 4th.

5 or 6 does it matter? no you will get used to either.only time i have found extra gears helpful if hauling heavy load up a hill.difference is minimal.
