Strange noise when accelerating in 1st
 
My '97 2.5L 5-speed has 142k on the dash, starting doing this about two months ago and I "think" its getting worse.

Only happens in first gear from a dead-stop, and also only when acceleration is somewhat moderate to hard. I can make it not make 'the noise' if I accelerate easy or baby the clutch. Have tried to re-produce the noise from a rolling start to no avail.

Best I can describe, its a popping noise. It can be lightly felt through the seat and stick shift, but strangely doesn't sound mechanical in nature. I mean, it doesn't sound like a metallic noise; more or less. I have a 2" budget lift installed, and 1.5" of body lift. My educated guess is the extra lift on stock sway bar links has put the front sway bar under stress, so when the body rolls aft (as during acceleration) I suspect the additional stress on the front sway bar as the culprit for the popping noise.

Can't really put my finger on this though, since it sounds like it's becoming more pronounced as more time and miles expire. BTW, it never did this until AFTER I installed the budget and body lifts.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I had a problem with a vibration that happened in most gears and was the worst at 45 mph regardless of gear. That being said at first troubleshoot you would eliminate the drive shaft due to gearing BUT it ended up being a ball bearing seal that went bad on the yoke in the transfer case. So just another thing for everyone to look at for possible causes of vibrations. Happy Trails

No vibrations (well, does but I know it's caused by an out-of-balance tire; threw the balance weight and haven't replaced it, lol).

Just a simple, quick 3-or-4 pop noise during acceleration in 1st gear....

if you haven't already grease everything you can and inspect your bushing for dirt or general debris that might be causing your suspension to stick and "pop" past. does it happen if you break hard (causing weight to go back to the front quickly) or at any other time. What about taking off in 2nd? also stand of your bumper and bounce the jeep if you get the pop you might be able to narrow down the front or rear end.

Hey man I had the same problem...Popping any time there was any kind of weight transfer (mainly first gear). There are 4 control arms on the bottom of your Jeep, tighten the control arm bolts and that should do the trick...hope this helps

Just got off the lift at the local do-it-yourself garage (had front/rear pinion seals to change) and was poking around underneath trying to look for anything that might be causing the noise.

Motor mounts - check

Sway bar/links/bushings - check

Tranny/transfer case mounts - WTF?

Decided to ensure what bolts and nuts I could get a socket on were tight while I was around the tranny/T-case mount area...all were tight except for this guy! Was tapping a socket onto this one, and off came the nut with remaining bolt still inside....was hanging on by a small shard of metal where it hadn't quite sheared all the way off, but has been this way for some time since bolt was rusted where sheared. Other three are tight, so don't suspect this is the culprit but something else to fix nonetheless.

By looking at it, I believe the whole mount has to be replaced; can't just replace the stud...or am I wrong?
